RPG Maker VX Ace

Have you ever felt like making games was only for teams of programmers, artists, and writers, or maybe a single ubermensch of game making skills? Have you dreamed of making a game with the story you want, the characters you created, the battles you choose?

Rpg Maker VX Ace is a wonderful "Game" to create your own games (At least games of the RPG genre). It takes the basics and covers most of it for you and premade system. How you change it is entirely up to you and what you want out of the game you make. Its very useful if you know what you are doing and if you love to create.
However if you can't dedicate yourself to make your game good (True you could make a game thats just silly), then this product may not be good for you, as there is work involved in making a good game.
It is a very useful "Game" however wether one finds it easy to use or not, and is capable of creating any game when one puts their mind to making it happen. It comes with a premade battle system, and character images, along with a map creation system and premade maps to use as a base.
Using Rpg Maker VX Ace is alot easier to use than programming a game from scratch and drawing all the art yourself, making the music yourself and then programming the art and music in. This program is a must if you want to get into making RPG Games.

RPG Maker VX Ace is by no means a game. It is a tool to be used to create RPG games. Wanted to make that abundantly clear.

RPGMaker VX Ace is a game that lets you make games. It is the latest (as of September 2013) in a series, and this is the best one yet. The interface is intuitive, but there is a comprehensive Help file and message boards across the internet to help when you need help.
It comes with everything you need you make your own RPGs, plus it has the ability to import graphics, music, and sounds from elsewhere, making it easy to change the look and feel of your creation. People who can program in Ruby can actually write scripts to do more complex things, making it a powerful tool for game designers rather than just a toy.
The replay value is super high- once you're done with a project, you can just make a new one! I actually learned a lot about graphic editing, organization, storytelling, and programming from working with RPGMaker, so it can be an excellent learning tool as well. Each game you make is better than the last, just from the experience of using the Maker.
Highly recommended for anyone who's played a game and thought, "I want to do that." Because now you can.

When I was a kid I was always in awe at the amazing games that I could play. I got invested in the characters, the plots, the worlds I played through - so much so that I would take pen to paper and write my own little games. Games that were part of my 'what if...' dreamscape for many years.
What if one day I could make a game?
Years later I finally managed to complete that dream - all thanks to Enterbrain - the creators of this engine series.
If you ever shared my childhood fantasy, ever dreamed of creating your own cast of characters and setting them off into a world of your own making, you can now live it.
With a simple, easy-to-use system; a great array of bright, cheery graphics; touching and epic scores; flexibility for new and experienced users, RPG Maker VX Ace is the best in it's field for easy game creation.

While it isn't top class in terms of what you can do (several JP products do a better job and depending on your goal, some EN products may be better), it has some good things going. It is one of the better EN products for making rpg games. As it is fairly simple to use up to a certain extent, it can be a great tool for people who are fairly casual and just have passing interests. However, as you continue to use it, you will find that some tasks that would appear simple are actually fairly difficult due to the limitations of the core product. There are workarounds such as scripting, but generally that would either be for more experienced users or users willing to get resources from others. That being said, to get the most out of the product, you should be willing to invest hours of time if not days or weeks or even months (maybe even years). In short, despite all the issues with it, it is fairly fun to use and easy to pick up.

RPG Maker VX Ace is very powerful and is a fantastic tool to help someone build an RPG in a fraction of the time. Normally, if someone wanted to make an RPG, they'd have to build it from the ground up with code, graphics, sound, music and all the calculations required in most RPG games.
The best part about it is the scripting (done in Ruby) which extends the functionality of gameplay in games you make. On that point, I rated Gameplay as 1 since there is no real "Gameplay" in RPG Maker VX Ace. It's not a game, it's a tool. Once bought, you can bring together a team of people to work on an RPG along with you and you can release some really spectacular games with it and sell them without the need to provide royalties.
If you're a fan of old-school RPG's and/or a hobbyist that wants to work on an RPG, then this software will really help you to accomplish this goal. I own it and it's serving me well, even for a non-commercial project!

This is the perfect tool to make the RPG of your choice! ...okay, like with all things, work must be put into making games, even with RPG Maker. However, if you've heard the saying "you reap what you sow", then you'll know that all the effort you put into whatever game you make will be immensely worth it... especially if you mess around with the program enough to need to bug-hunt mistakes you are likely to make. As this is the seventh product in the RPG Maker line for PC, the developers had spent a lot of time getting it to work right, starting with the release of RPG Maker XP in the West (which is the fifth product in the line to be made... it's just the first one to be legally available here). In short, this is the perfect tool to make your dream RPG, especially in regards to how much effort was put into this engine to make it better than its six predecessors.

For anybody who wants to make a game to sell and make an extra buck(and are willing to spend $90 (which I guess they can earn back) to achieve it), this is perfect, except for some things.
For starters, even though you can customize windowskin, sprites, battlers, etc., you can't go far with customizing the actual layout of menus and such without some RGSS3 knowledge, which is a set back from other game makers that aren't good for JRPGs but do not require any knowledge of scripting languages.
Of course, if you know RGSS3, you're set.
And another small issue is that the Ace character generator does not fit well with any other graphics in the engine when referring to faces. All the other faces are side-view, and suddenly the Ace generator generates front-view faces? It's a bit confusing. And it would also be nice if we could put them into faceset sheets easily instead of multiple facesheets with only one face on them...
Yeah, there's some issues.
But if you look past those(and also realize that there are programs you could use to fix some of them) it is a great program for any aspiring game designers.

RPG Maker is very easy to use right from the start. A majority of the ground work is done already (except creating your game of course) and there are great tutorials available via blogs and forums. If you are unhappy with any materials available in the program they can be switched out for custom graphics and audio. Further advancements can be done via scripting using Ruby. The major view to keep in mind is RPG Maker isn't just a game, it is a tool for designing games. RPG Maker, by far, has been one of the easiest engines to learn and with taking the appropriate measures to create content can be one of the easiest engines to develop an Indie 2D RPG whether it be free or commercial. I'm very happy with the scores provided because ultimately it falls to the developer to create content. For the price, the included content is top notch in my opinion.

RPG Maker VX Ace is a program for creating your own video game. I know it says "RPG" in the title but I've seen a variety of games made on this platform: action adventure games, visual novels, rpgs and a host of other genres.
It's easy to pick up and learn in an afternoon or two. It's so easy that a child can learn to use it. However, it also has the options for more advanced users who can script to modify and make their own games.
It comes with a selection of basic graphics, music and sound effects to get you started but allows for the more creative to use their own assets. (I rate the graphics and sounds at an average not because I don't care for them but because it's only an average quality of what I've seen used in games made using the program.)
I've been a fan and user of the RPG Maker series for years and this latest installation is the best yet!

I love how customizable this program can be. Mind you, you have to have the want and desire to actually create something that is yours or based off of some other game. The program comes with plunty of starter graphics and then you can create some of your own! Learn to script just a bit of Ruby and you will be able to customize your game based on how you want it to be. The online community is great, and you can easily find even more graphics and scripts to really make your game stand out. Great for people who have always wanted to make old school games, yet never really knew where to start. START HERE!

RPG Maker is the latest tool in RPG Maker series. It's a decent tool to produce old school JRPGs for people who can't program. Out of the box it provides some graphics and sounds to produce a game. However be warned that it's graphic style is really outdated, they barely changed from 1995 and it's 2013 outside. The tool is useful only for making retro style Japanese RPGs and nothing else. Probably a good toy for kids who want to try their hand at making games.

I have been working with the RPG Maker series since the early days and have watched programs come and go, each having different pros and cons. XP was a landmark for the series and offered it's audience a nice, sturdy engine to design a game on, while still staying very easy to pick up and use. VX, in my opinion, was a step backwards due to many features that were either removed or changed. However, VX Ace not only took a step forward, it ran up and took a flying leap ahead for the series. While some features are still a little less than desired, it is by far the best RPG Maker to date. I now have been using the program since it's Japanese release and have not had any reason to think about turning back. I more than recommend this program to anyone and everyone who would like to make game design their new hobby.

...do it by yourself!
If you are a fan of Games in general or especially RPGs, you might have felt that this or that of a certain game could have been made better. Or you have a great idea of a game for yourself and you think, this must been done by someone. Then you are in the right place with the VX Ace!
Thoug this is not a game at all! It is a possibility to create a game. It has its limits, especially graphic-wise, since you are bound to a 2D-graphic. But within these boundaries you can import, draw, just create your own graphics. You can dig the web for fancy sound. And you can use several boards and communities to get help for every idea you come up with.
It can be a lot of work, but it also can be a lot of fun!

I've played around with a lot of different RPG and Game Creation software that promises no programming. In the end most of them require you to still think like a programmer and you just click and drag the prebuilt code blocks into place. I don't think like a programmer at all so I hate that set up. This doesn't do that, everything is just a matter of finding the right tab and choosing things from a list of options. You can make a fun game with very little effort, it comes with everything you need including some prebuilt maps. I mostly just play around with graphics and maps and I've had a ton of fun with this since I purchased it in December. I may never get around to actually making a game but it's been worth it just to make something silly and fun and say "I did this!"

Just to avoid any confusion... RPG Maker VX Ace is an awesome program which allows anyone with a story idea or game concept to build a game pretty close to what they have in their head. You can always go out of your way to customize graphics, music, game systems, or whatever else you desire, but the system ships with good defaults that let you focus soley on the story. The community for this game is awesome as well, once you purchase this game, head to the official RPG Maker Web forums for any support you may need in building your masterpiece! There you will find many resources, including graphics, music, and scripts which you can add to enhance your game. (Most of which are totally free!)

This product will take you as far as you want to go, or as casual as you might need. I bought it recently and I have been learning so much and creating my dream psx / snes era game that has been sitting in my head for years. I never thought that making a game would be this easy, not only that but the ceiling for skill in this puppy is suprisingly high. I am just now breaking into the flexible ruby scripting language and going off from there. I was so impressed that I decided to write this review and I never write reviews. Big ups to the rpg maker team and heres to hopes that they keep making these things.

RPG VX Ace is a wonderful program for creating your own RPG. It does cater mainly to those of the SNES/Genesis 16-bit era given the graphics but for those who love RPGs, most would agree it is the story and gameplay that count more.
The core engine itself has a lot of material that you can utilize to create games and for those who want to go further, there is the ability to write custom scripts and design your own materials. There are also numerous add-on graphic and music packs that can be purchased that are easily imported as well. Some might say that there are more powerful or graphically impressive engines out there but this has definitely been a good one to start with for me.

It's rather hard to fit the mold of Gameplay, Graphics, Sound and Lasting Appeal as this is a game maker, not a game, so I will do my best here. There are a decent amount of graphics and sound included with the release, but that is not what makes this great. What makes it great is the ability to add all of your custom graphics, sounds, scripts, etc. It's a good place to get started and see if you truly want to become a game designer. It's also fun to just mess around as a hobby, or create little scenes that your friends and family can play through. I.E.: Having a baby and have gamer parents? Why not make a short game that your parents can play through and let them discover through your creative ways?

The engine is powerful, but there is a learning curve for 'eventing', scripting, and most of all debugging. Should you get past the basics this software can provide a rich and rewarding experience of making your own games with custom graphics, sounds, music, and more. You do not need any sort of talent for the aforementioned as they are available non commercially and commercially for use at your discretion. I have bought this product for myself and four other friends, along with the majority of DLC content for myself.

The idea of being able to make your own games is awesome. This engine makes it easy to do so. It is in the style of old school rpgs, like you use to play on SNES.
You can customize all graphics. There are plenty of artists that share their work for free and some who do outstanding work that will charge a minimal amount if you want to make a commercial game.
You can also customize your game even further with scripting. Again there are tons of scripters who share their work and a few of them charge for commercial usage.
The offical forums for VX Ace are very active with talented and helpful folks that contribute to the community.
I wish that the mapping system still had the layer styling that RPG Maker XP had, but other then that I believe VXAce has made vast improvements over it's past versions. Many of the scripts people use to use to make their games have become default settings in this version.
This program has provided me months and months of playablity. Making and customizing graphics, Learning and writing scripts, figuring out how to make cutscenes with events, etc. There's so much to do and all of it is fun with a little bit of frustration mixed in. I would definately recommend this to anyone interested in making their own game. I would suggest starting off with a small project first before tackling your big dreams ;)

Some serious developers have used this tool and made successful commercial games - like "To the Moon" available on Gog and Steam - and "You Are Not the Hero" on Kickstarter. You can make custom content for this tool. Sure it became popular for newbies who aren't all-in-one-artists-composers-writers-designers-programmers, but in the hands of the right development team, it can be great. The default assets are useful (albeit generic, hence the average scores); but there's a large, helpful support community online.
