Monster Lab

Monster Lab is set in the eerie world of Uncanny Valley where the evil Baron Mharti rules with a cruel hand. The player takes on the role of an apprentice scientist who must perform a vast array of intricate experiments to create their very own monster from over 100 million possible monster part variations on offer. Taking control of your monster, the player can then explore the land; searching for ingredients to make more monster parts, hunting out other monsters to defeat in combat, uncovering quests to embark upon or simply competing in the numerous mini-games available. The ultimate goal is to vanquish the evil Baron Mharti and liberate the villagers through mastering experiments, creating a powerful army of monsters and conquering all of the vast environments. Only then will you rise through the ranks and become a scientist worthy of defeating the Baron!

When I saw the box, I thought ... "Little Kids Game". Boy was I wrong. If you liked the movie "Igor", then you will love this game. This game is so much fun!! Building each monster part and customizing them from 3 different technologies ( Mechanical, Alchemical, and Biological). Each technology has an advantage over the other, so make monsters from each technology to handle all of your enemies. The quality of the parts you build depends on how well you do the experimentation. If you do really well, the part will give a Bonus attack power. The Combat is turn-based, so you don't have to worry about hitting the wrong button during combat. The initial tutorial missions can seem to drag-on a little bit, but they are definitely required to know exactly what you are doing. As a 40 year-old, I was really surprised at how much fun it is. FUN FOR ALL AGES.

Even though the first impression would turn off almost anyone, this game has a very fun experiment type creature creator and easy, yet fun combat with quirky storyline! The game starts out with you playing the role of a Mad Scientist's Academy's Apprentice and the first of three branches [Mechanical, Biological and Alchemical] the Mechanical one is open and upon somewhat of a "tutorial" it loans you a monster to try out combat, if successful you collect a few "ingredients" or 'parts' for experimenting in the lab to create parts such as a Head, Torso, Left and Right Arms and Legs. Further more, upon successful experiments you have a chance of having an additional buff or de-buff on the created piece - i.e., Radioactive arms! After creating the piece, its recipe is stored for future use if the player should want to replicate it. Taking the monster into play, you walk around freely on what appears to look like a board game layout in different locations like a Swamp or Graveyard, Haunted Neighborhoods and the like. You'll see mini-game scenarios placed around as well as enemy monsters roaming around the map spaces. Choose to avoid them or walk into them to enter Combat Mode. Combat is simple turn based, aim the Nunchuck left, right, up or down to select your monster's body piece and on the right will show two options either an Attack move which highlights the enemy's targeted parts, a Block, select the legs sometimes allows a Flee ability and if left centered, you can Recharge [monster's ammo] or Dodge which replenishes the ammo and chances dodging an attack, with little energy return. The body parts on the upper corners of the screens show the monster's health, Green is in well condition to Yellow, Red and Black meaning the part has been destroyed. Destroy all parts or the Torso to win the combat match! Plenty of enjoyment via the mini games either discovering/collecting new 'ingredients' for new parts to actually creating the parts in the labs. Must have game for that "Mad Scientist" in you! Pros: Fun simplistic game, monster creator, tons of possible mix and matches for a unique monster. Cons: Turn based combat might not be for everyone, some mini-games might be a bit too challenging for some, could have deeper in-depth lab creation.
