One of the reasons I still own a PS2
PostedOctober 4, 2012
I do a majority of my gaming nowadays on my Xbox 360. It's not that I love Microsoft or hate Sony or Nintendo; it just worked out that way. That being said; my PS2 still gets quite a workout: The Shin Megami Tensei RPGs, Xenosaga Trilogy (essentially a whole lot of older RPGs), and the Silent Hill Series.
Silent Hill 2 is similar to the older Resident Evil Games but with more emphasis on the horror aspect and atmosphere and less on the gun-play and fighting. Don't get me wrong: you'll do your share of fighting in Silent Hill 2 but it just doesn't take center stage. Because the whole point of the Silent Hill games IS the plot and story I won't give anything away....You are essentially traveling around a town called Silent Hill trying to find someone that may or may not be alive. The story progresses from there and branches to multiple endings according to your actions (or lack thereof). The graphics are decent for the PS2... the cut scenes are pretty crisp but the game itself is a big grainy.... I actually found this heightened the fright-factor when combined with the fog and dimly-lit areas. The sound is great; music is not constant but used to good effect and the sound effects, which are essential in any good scary game/movie/whatever, are great. The game-play itself isn't the smoothest but it's fine, if a bit clunky, once you get the hang of it. Combat can be a little awkward but I found it reinforces the whole idea that you aren't some commando or ninja or trained solider; you're just "some guy".... so you wouldn't expect your character to be destroying everything left and right with ease. The puzzles are cool.... they can be a little hard at times but there are lots of online tips and FAQs that you can turn to if you get stuck (although I'd strongly consider using that as a last resort..... solving a crazy-hard puzzle and advancing to that next area can be SOOOO gratifying when you've had to struggle with it for a while.
If you enjoy Survival Horror games you'll probably enjoy Silent Hill 2. When i say "Survival Horror", I suppose I mean the older-school definition where the game is very difficult, you have to check every door and every corner of every room to find enough medicine/ammo/equipment to survive, and combat is best avoided where possible. This isn't a "Run and Gun Kill Everything with Hand Grenades" kind of game; it's story intensive, heavy with atmosphere, and relatively thinking-intensive. If you are looking for a laid-back shooter: I'd probably look elsewhere. If you want a tense experience that will test you and give you a few freaky moments (and a cool story), then I'd give Silent Hill 2 a shot. (And hey, if you enjoy it you know you've got a whole catalog of Silent Hills to try)

Very good definition on SURVIVAL horror.

8.5 out of 10
Difficulty:Just Right
Time Spent:10 to 20 Hours
The Bottom Line:"Surprisingly good"
The Good:
Interesting story-
Excellent environment-
A great many thrills and very scary-
Incredible main Antagonist-
The Bad:
Bad acting and wording-
Some of the story comes across very corny-
Maria is as annoying as !@#$...
Silent Hill 2 is a very grim and terrifying game. The story is very interesting and has it's share of surprises. You protagonist is a just an ordinary guy so therefor is no the best at combat. Making the game realistic in that way and gives you a good scenes of vulnerability and makes the game a true 'survival' game. The puzzles you come across are some of my favorite and really make you think.
Your character, James Sunderland, is haunted be a deep guilt. You find out at the end of the game. The creation of this guilt is a horrifying grim reaper known as the Pyramid head by most. This horrifying creature is the embodiment of James' guilt.
As good as the plot is the voice acting and wording is done very poorly and you often can't help but make fun of and laugh at the dialogue. James' voice is also very flat and often a plain mono tone. Not to mention that he is one of Silent Hill's more stupid inhabitants. Mind you he's still a very interesting protagonist.
Along with the bad acting you get a very annoying side character, Maria. What was intended for he was to create a character that would tempt James with a different life in contrast to him trying to find his wife. Think of Spider man and how he is often torn between his life as Spider-Man and his life as Peter Parker with Marry Jane. Sadly Konami only ended making someone who will make you cringe every time she talks. This could of been done well, but sadly did not.
As for game play Silent Hill does very well. The combat is intentionally clunky and difficult. This will often force you to either run or sneak past the various monsters. The difficulty is just right though so you wont be stuck for a ridiculously long time, but still provides a challenge.
There are also a good number of thrills and terrifying moments that will have you on edge through the whole game. The horror is especially focused on the psychological terror/horror. You will often here noises that you will be sure that are a monster that may or may not be there. The environment is also vary horrifying and grim. Though some of the monsters are rather a little bit much to the point you not the scared of them. One looks like a table with feet.
Bottom line Silent Hill is an excellent game and is worth the time and money.
