A Legend

hands down, this is the best game ever made. when Silent Hill 1 came out in 99, I had a hard time getting into it at first but over time, it grew on me. When SH2 was released in 01, I officially became a fan. There's so much depth to this game. The characters have very deep emotional backgrounds (Eddie being my favorite) and the monsters were carefully designed to symbolize the protagonist' darkest fears/desires. I'm not sure how anyone can compare it to Resident Evil, it's nothing alike. If you appreciate passionate story telling, addictive gameplay and a game that has replay value to last for the next 10 years, then SH2 is the game for you.

A creepy experience
PostedOctober 27, 2010
I really enjoyed this game very much. The atmosphere was creepy, the monsters frighting, and it kept you guessing. This is a perfect game for anyone who loves survival horror games. I just barley beat it, and i'm excited to play it again this coming Halloween. I'm planning on getting another silent hill, so that i can forget where i need to go, so that I can play this again. My next goal for this game is to play in the dark, which might be hard, but oh so worth it!

Having played video games for most of my life, I never thought the scene from Resident Evil (1) of the "hell hounds" unexpectedly crashing in through the windows, giving chase down a narrow corridor would have been topped on my list of "scared the crap right outta me" video game moments, that is, until I played the true survivor/horror experience that is Silent Hill 2. While the aforementioned moment was more of the "make you jump out of your socks" variety, Silent Hill 2 relies more heavily on a constant dark and tangibly creepy atmosphere from start to finish in order to deliver it's frights, and it is in this respect that it outshines any game I've ever played. The story is well thought out and revealed over a nice pace without becoming convoluted or dependent on the series' previous entry whatsoever, outside of the game's namesake, and character interactions are pretty well scripted for a video game plot. Heck, it's pretty well scripted for a horror movie plot, as it keeps you wondering what the true nature and motives of the game's characters as well as the validity of your being there in the first place, are until such time, it's made abundantly clear. And the constantly unnerving psychological tension is unrelenting throughout. Despite some infrequent pop-ups (usually during in-game movies), graphically speaking, this game just looks marvelous. It's by far, one of the better looking games from the PS2 era I've played, which I was pleasantly surprised to see, given that it was also one of the earlier titles of the console's life. Everything from the well designed environments, to the stellar lighting effects, to the nightmarish character designs, to the nicely executed graphic filter that makes objects just out of your line of sight seem plausible in a "friend or foe" fashion (or even if what you may or may not have seen was really there to begin with, for that matter), this game just never seems to disappoint visually. Where the semi-dated graphics may leave some present day gamers wanting, the sound has it in spades. It's as every bit vital to the game play as the visuals, as the preferred method of enemy detection is static sounding interference on your character's hand held radio that grows louder with the approach of any baddies. The well orchestrated and industrial-sounding music parts deliver right on cue with what's happening on screen, and even in scenes where nothing much outside of exploring is taking place, the sound effects and music will keep the brooding feeling rolling uninterrupted. Controls, for the most part, are pretty fluid. I like to think that developers at this point of game design, were still trying to effectively find a way for players to control cameras and characters in 3D environments, and this one delivers to near perfect status by at least giving a small amount of choice to the player as to the arrangement of button mapping. However, lack of complete and total camera control leaves little to be desired. It's effective, just not perfect, there are certain points where it's viewed from a fixed angle and can not be moved in any direction. And that may actually play well to the game's atmospheric quality by keeping certain perspectives out of direct sight, or in it for that matter, and limiting the camera's view points to what is usually an important location, but it can occasionally make battles a tad frustrating in that you know by the sound of your radio, an enemy is about 10 or so paces in front of you, you just can't whip the camera around to combat-ready yourself. Overall, this is a minor gripe, and one of the only real ones. As I'd mentioned, the button mapping is free to your discretion which makes certain actions like viewing your map, or bringing up your items menu on the fly for a quick healing or weapon reload a cinch. And all menu options are pretty straightforward and easy to get a handle with for quick uses, so interface gets a 9 from me. I
