LA? How come every schmo in this GTA ripoff has a N.Y. Brooklyn accent? I gave this game a chance, and found the sequel far superior. It wasnt even the controls or the graphics. It was the straight jacket missions, your forgettable Brandon Lee wannabe protagonist .The forgettable secondary characters, and the pathetic plot scripting. The worst open world game ever made in the GTA style.

Just so you know, Grand Theft Auto doesn't own the idea of being a criminal in a video game. I hate when people say that a game about gangsters or other criminals is a Grand Theft Auto rip off. Crime is a genre. You can't say that Medal of Honor is a rip off of Call of Duty. First Person Shooters is a genre. Call of Duty doesn't own it. The same goes for GTA. GTA isn't even about gangsters. San Andreas was but the others were some guy getting into trouble. So how about you judge this game based on its content. You can't say that True Crime is a rip off of GTA.

I had high expectations for True Crime:LA back in 04
I thought it would be just like GTA Titles like San Andreas and Vice City and I'm happy to say it lived up to those expectations and is still better than a lot of Sandox games to this day!
Story is good and has six possible endings some of which depending on how you handled previous chapters
Characters are likeable Nick Kang may be a little Cocky but has a lot of humor to his personality
Voice acting is Excellent
Graphics are good for the ps2 but don't expect anything new modern day
Open World is fun with side missions as Police Calls
you can also frisk civilians and make arrests
moral system is Similar to Red Dead Redemption you get good points for a good deed and bad points for bad deeds
this like Red Dead doesn't effect the story though
Gameplay is fun
Fight engine is the best in any game with a lot of combos to be unlocked and level ups
shooting is fun as well and you can dual two different sets of guns
driving is good and controls are easy to learn
Pros: Story, Characters, voice acting, open world
Cons:old game

Good Game Concept, But Sadly Disappointed.

In True Crime, you take on the role of a Los Angeles police officer, suspended indefinitely for unspecified infractions that have you classified as a "loose cannon" that no one else on the force wants to work with. But when the triads and the local Russian gangs start working together, you--and your tough, recklessness take on everyday police work--are the LAPD's only hope. After quickly offending your new female partner by calling her a secretary and asking her to get you coffee, you take to the streets and set about solving this crime "your way." Along the way, you'll uncover some deep conspiracies, attempt to rescue your kidnapped brother, and even find out the truth about what happened to the father you barely knew--who, of course, was also an LA police officer who happened to vanish while investigating a particularly tough case. By the end, you'll have caused several things to explode, engaged in high-speed car chases, and shot holes in or broken the necks of just about every hardened criminal in the City of Angels.
Game Play: This game plays like Grand Theft Auto, but a little different. You can hi-jack cars, beat down innocent civilians; get the cops chasing you, etc. But other than the usual GTA game play, there are some other factors that make this game unique. One of those is the great ''shoot while you are in the car''. Nice little factor that allows you to shoot anything while driving. First, how do you reload and drive at the same time? This guy has infinite ammo with his pistols, literally. While driving, he doesn't even bother reloading, and on the streets, he reloads so fast you won't notice it. Second, instead of just being able to beat people down with baseball bats, knives, and just bare fists. No, in this game, you actually get to do moves. Dropkicks, elbow drops and punch/kick combinations. Third, is the good cop/bad cop rating. If you take out limbs to subdue criminals, your rating goes down, and you get reprimended. You use headshots, hit civilians, your rating goes down, so civilians and police officers are on you until you do better things. You get different endings (possibility of three) depending on your rating. You also get the chance, while cruising around on the ''Go To'' missions, to solve street crimes for points that you can use to upgrade one of three things: your gun, your car, or your fighting abilities. These street crimes are everything between stopping street racers, foiling a ''chick fight'', or going hand to hand to an armed mugger.
The Bad: Controlling the cars is frustrating. You try using the hand brake, and your car swerves out of control regardless on how fast/what speed/how hard you are turning. Missions requiring you to tail a suspect get agitating. As your distance to a subject car is measured via a straight line, rather than actual road distance, forcing you to back off even further at corners, then gun the motor as you rapidly lose sight of the subject as you round the corner. The camera is so often your biggest enemy in this game, and consistently fails you when you need it most. It locks when you don't want it to, free roams when you need it to lock, and whether moving the right analog stick to the right will move the camera left, right, or not at all is pure guesswork in many situations. Aiming can get annoying, as you get a big target, and small people, so it's kind of difficult to get in a precise head shot when you need one (such as the sniper missions). Hand-to-hand fighting is generally a button-mashing affair, with special damaging moves when you stun your opponents placed seemingly to even the odds against tougher enemies, who may land more hits than you, but do not have access to similar moves. The grapples you learn are a near waste, as in any fight involving the story; your enemies are too tough to land a hold to make your grapple. While the city layout is essentially a map of the city, it doesn't get used enough. Unlike GTA, which makes you use nearly every road over the course of the game, here the game really takes place in 45% of the city at bes. It'll be up to you if you want to depart off the main roads you'll usually be taking to see the rest of the city. The camera quirks really make so much of the game play difficult, and drivers who pay no attention to the fact that there's a cop engaging a perp in the middle of the road, and then run you over, frustrate all the more.
Graphics: decent, not the best that I've ever seen for a 2003 game. Nice introductory scenes as well. However, the cars could have been drawn a little better, as can the explosions and smoke. The graphics around the city could have used a bit of touch up. You blaze by so fast most of the time you'd hardly notice. In the areas that count, the graphics are superbly done with people's faces always matching their mood well.
Sound: the soundtrack fits nicely with rock and rap, though if you don't like rappers like Ice-T and Snoop Dogg, you could be in for a long game. Unfortunately, you cannot mix and match the songs within the sections; you can only turn the individual songs on or off. It would have been a lot cooler to be able to switch around the songs to the different categories. The background and main combat sounds are not bad. They are the quality you'd expect, typical fighting punches, kicks, breaking stuff, hitting objects, and crashing noises. Voice acting is fairly cheesy for the protagonist, who often says odd things that don't quite fit, and Christopher Walken's talents are wasted as a lowly background character, who narrates the opening and then mostly just teases/praises you during skill upgrade attempts.
Conclusion: Although it is not a bad game to play, True Crime: Streets of L.A. is definitely not a solid Grand Theft Auto clone. But if you want a change of pace, this does make a good game to play for a little bit, at least before you go back to GTA.
