Yu Yu Hakusho: Tournament Tactics Review
========= Story ========= Story wise this game is a mess. It's obvious that the game expects the player to be familiar with the Dark Tournament Arc from Yu Yu Hakusho before they play this game because it barely touches the highlights like Genkai's death and the reason for why Yusuke and company are competing in the tournament in the first place. It also will frustrate those unfamiliar with the franchise since they will miss some of the jokes contained within the game. ========= Game Play ========= Game Play wise this game is extremely bare bones and offers rather little for fans of the shows or fans of SRPGs. The fans of the show will be disappointed with the slow pace of battles and lack of dialogue exchanges during fights in order to keep them both interesting and seem all the more epic and important while fans of SRPGs will be bored by the slow pace of combat and the weak AI.
And, yes the AI is extremely weak in this game with it sometimes getting stuck on walls or wasting turns by moving back and forth instead of advancing on the party. This tends to make battles feel more like a chore then intense and strategic since you'll easily be able to drop most enemies with two or three attacks.
Albeit the slow pacing issues are eventually addressed if you level up your characters movement stat, but the fact that you need to do so was a terrible idea in my opinion. It makes many of the battles feel extremely slow since your characters will only be able to move one to three spaces depending on the terrain. It makes the early battles feel even more drawn out and further highlights the problems with the AI.
On top of that the game includes items that can be used in combat, but these items are rather useless. You'll rarely have any need for them especially if you put Yukina in your party and even then you'll rarely have any use for them as long as you remember the SRPG basics like grouping up on enemies and trying to land attacks from the sides or behind.
And to finish off all of the problems the game has serious balancing issues with certain characters like the Masked Fighter, Yusuke, Hiei, and Yukina being far to useful and everyone else being rather useless. This is largely because most of the other characters deal rather little damage but require a massive amount of spirit energy to use. This forces the player to spend time recharging it instead of engaging the enemy like any normal person would want to do.
On the slight bright side the game does feature some bare basics like difficult terrain requiring more movement points to get through and attacks dealing more damage if they are dealt from the sides or behind, but outside of that the game lacks any of the mechanics that add thought and skill to these battles like character classes and equipment and item management. ========= Graphics ========= Graphically speaking the game is rather weak to be honest. While the characters look like their intended characters they lack a lot of detail and just feel rather plain. They would honestly feel at home on a 8-bit NES. It also doesn't help that you'll spend most of the game looking at the same generic enemies from beginning to end that have little to do with the show outside of appearing in the background during an episode or two. ========= Sound ========= The game only has a few tracks and will replay the ones it does have so often that you'll quickly decide to turn the volume off in order to spare your ears. The game could have helped itself by having different battle themes for the various combat areas and maybe a character theme when you use their ultimate attack. ========= Lasting Appeal ========= The game offers little in terms of lasting appeal to be honest. After you've beaten the main story mode there isn't anything else to do besides max out your characters on missions against generic enemies. These battles grew tiresome during the campaign so I'd see little draw in continuing them. ========= Scores ========= Story: 2 Game Play: 3 Graphics: 4 Sound: 2 Lasting Appeal: 1 Overall: 2.5
