Final Fantasy XII was my favorite in the series, it was seriously underrated but i like it because the storyline didn't follow the traditional Final Fantasy's along with the battle system its cool because of the major free roam on the extremely huge map and the side quests.

I had high hopes for this game, but in the end I was disappointed. The combat system does everything for you and the story is very dull for a Final Fantasy game, lacking the epic build up of previous games in the franchise. Also the supposed main character of the game, Vaan spent most of the time in the background while the true main characters discussed the boring politics of the game's world.
The redeeming point in the game is the huge expansive world that you have to explore and it's cities, and the side quests.

Even though Final Fantasy XII may not be like the other Final Fantasies there is a lot of good things going for this game I find it to be the best PS2 Final Fantasy and that's saying something. The thing people notice the most about the game that aren't similar to the others in the series are the battle system and the license board both which let's you customize how each character play while your not controlling them and the weapons,magic, stats,etc. each character use. This is the longest Final Fantasy game that I've played and that's not a bad thing the game is at the right difficulty where the only real frustrating thing's you encounter aren't optional. This game is filled with a lot of side quest and secrets to keep you playing after you beat the game. The best part about the game is that it's filled with exploration and not a straight line like FFXIII and to some extent FFX. So if you could put up with this game not being like the rest you'll enjoy it and it's also cheap so you won't be losing that much if you don't like it.

I know what people have come to expect in a FF game and I normally expect the same thing. A long linear epic storyline with unforgettable characters... well thats not exactly the case here and thats not exactly a bad thing. FFXII strays from the norm with a more action oriented battle system (that was still seemingly turn-based) and a more wide open enviroment to explore at your own pace instead of being pushed from point A to point B which was actually kind of fun. With that being said its easy to forget whats even going on in the story at times and the characters were... well not the most memorable. Not so final fantasy-like I suppose. I expect this game would be accepted more if it possibly had a different title attached to it. Seeing how the fans know what they want its hard to mess with a working formula, but if you can try to keep an open mind you might find that you enjoy this game for the way it plays (the skill system is awesome btw). The story wasnt HORRIBLE either... just not what you'd expect. Its still Final Fantasy after all. I say give it a go, and for ten bucks its a worth while addition.
