Doesn't live up to any of the 'hype'

Well, as several other posters have already said, the cell, creature, and tribe stages of the game were relatively fun. If they had left the game with those 3 stages and made them longer and 'deeper' we might have a good game. The civilization and space stages of the game are nothing more than a bad RTS that allows a player to design his/her own cities/vehicles/weapons. Graphics and sound quality are nothing exceptional for a game today, but they are crisp, clear and eye-catching. The interface is relatively simple, though for the life of me I cannot understand why they must change how the camera is operated from one evolutionary stage to the next...one method would be fine, instead of having to re-learn the camera at each stage.The bulk of the game boils down to an RTS-like game with vast unit/city customization options. However, your designs seem to have little effect to the game mechanics, and is primarily for visual purposes. In the end, the game gets an 'A' for allowing the user an endless amount of creativity in designing their units. Regrettably, I thought I was buying a computer game...not a paint program/drafting software. The game fails as a game and wins as a kiddie drawing board.

Finally got a copy of Spore and installed this on my PC. The install went smooth without any problems. I set the graphics to the highest settings. With the highest settings, the game looks beautiful. I have to say, this game is awesome and will appeal to a lot of people. The gameplay is very balanced, it is not easy or hard. First time gamers will have fun and be able to finish the game. From what I can see, there are 5 stages to the game. I am on stage 4 and so far the experience is wonderful. The game allows you to build your own cities, vehicles, tanks and tons of other things. If you are a creative person you can actually make the game look better since you are designing a lot of it. You can also see all the other designs that were created by different people using the network that comes build into the game. Overall, this game is a lot of fun and a recommended purchase.

Easy to get into

This game really sets it's self apart from other games. It's not that it's amazing it's just extremely creative and customizable. It's like the Sims if instead of houses you could create your own universe. It's fun, cute, playful, and very easy to spend hours playing. I would say some of the controls are pretty silly but what it lacks in graphics it makes up for in creativity and a stylized look. I would recommend this game to people who appreciate simulation and character customization. If neither of those are important to you then you probably wont like this game. I like the fact that it's a game that actually inspires you to create something completely original, to think about how a living organism is built from the ground up. You can modify almost anything even the structure of vertebrae. Even the choices you make as a creature effect how you progress in traits. All in all it's a good game it's just not for everyone.

Well worth the 2 year wait!

First off...this game is AMAZING! You have to see the game for what it is....a journey through evolution. I have read some reviews that say the game itself is to 'simple' - the game is FAR from simple! The choices you make drastically affect your future as a species... The game starts out simple....cell phase, creature phase are what they are - a STARTING point. Once you hit the tribal stage and civilization stage, things start getting more 'involved'....and then once you hit the space stage - the game EXPLODES! The possibilities of this game are endless! I played for like 10 straight hours and only started to tap into the space age! Every species acts differently, every aspect of the game is modifiable, ever action you make affects how other species looks upon you. The game gets 'longer' as you move into new phase, which offers a new challenges and new experiences. This game has taken years upon years to develop...and I must say, the rewards offered are deserving of the wait! I am happy to see Spore finally on the market and look forward to the MANY expansions that I am sure are to follow!!! Keep up the good work, Maxis!
