A Good Game, With a Few Flaws
This game is perfect for: hardcore gamers
======= Story ======= The story of Devil Summoner follows Raidou Kuzunoha as he tries to solve a case that begins with the mysterious kidnapping of a high school girl by army figures dressed in red. The mystery quickly deepens though as the case reveals itself to be a massive conspiracy involving powerful groups within the capital. If you don't solve this case and put an end to those behind then the entire capital will be destroyed. Do you have what it takes to save the capital? ======= Gameplay ======= Combat is in real-time, and largely relies on the use of your sword and combination skills. While, you do have a gun in this game it is largely worthless outside of putting demons in a weakened state so you can confine them or do additional damage. Using your gun can also stun an enemy temporarily to break up their attacks as well.
I have mixed feelings about the single demonic partner you can have on the field at a time. On one hand the demon's can be extremely helpful with distracting the enemy. On the other hand the AI tends to wander directly into attacks even if it is obvious that an attack is coming. It would have been nice if you could issue orders for the AI to stay back at times.
I also have a few issues with the map. While you can't control the camera and for the most part this isn't an issue. In a few areas the camera angle can be completely swapped around so you'll end up going back to where you were before if you don't anticipate this. I also have a few issues with the battle area as well. The camera doesn't cover the entire area. So, it is possible for enemies to move out your range of vision and pepper you with spells that you'll never see coming.
There are also a few issues with the bosses in this game as well. It is rather obvious early on that dealing with bosses is all about combination attacks. But, the problem is that many bosses have extremely large health bars, and take little damage from your regular attacks. Boss battles in this game can go on for 10 to 15 minutes rather easily because of this. This isn't a major gripe, but it is annoying considering the bosses tend to be relatively easy outside of the fact they take forever to kill.
It should also be noted that you can't have two demons that are the same at any time. If that was a bit unclear I'll explain it a bit better. If you have an Alp it is impossible for you to confine another Alp. This is more of an annoyance then a problem.
The puzzle solving is rather well done for the most part. Though, some of the puzzles can only be solved if you pay close attention to what is said during dialogue scenes. ======= Graphics ======= Graphically the game feels rather solid. My only complaint is that the eyes tend to feel rather soulless. Outside of that the graphics tend to feel rather realistic or entirely surreal. My only real complaint with this area of the game is that you can run through most people in the game. The only exception to this is people that you can talk to. ======= Sound ======= The game has a few tracks that are rather enjoyable to listen to. The main track that stands out is the one that plays before you reach the start menu and shows you scenes from the game. Another track that stands out plays while you’re at the nameless shrine and it reminds me of a song that is used rather frequently during Final Fantasy 13. ======= Lasting Appeal ======= After completing the game you can replay you’re save file on hard mode. You can also unlock a new outfit as well as a few other benefits. ======= Score ======= Story: 9 Gameplay: 8 Graphics: 7 Sound: 9 Lasting Appeal: 8 Overall: 8.2
