Iffy and distorted physics
PostedJune 2, 2013
Lately I've felt Spyro, the series, has received an evil eye when it was moved from the original Playstation to its counterpart, Playstation 2. But now I see it could go either way (most of its fans under the radar). I was excited about this game, but, as I continued to play-an impending trench stopped me in my tracks. I've played both "A Hero's Tail" and now this one. They both share the same fallacy of re-spawning you to a position to where you previously "died". However, It's unheard of on "TLoS: A New Beginning" (meaning, you have unlimited lives as far as I'm concerned). For me, this is unrealistic. Fantasy should follow laws on a certain degree too. At the moment I perished before the enemies' hands I came back to the same spot as if nothing ever happened (except for replenishing my stats to 100%). I lost interest in that moment. I could have at least backtracked again, but no I am in the same spot with my predetermined events as if nothing happened. I'm not particularly a master or anything, but, I felt it was a big laugh in my face as if I couldn't complete the game like in a true run. But what really got on my final nerves was Sparx's cheesy comments and dialogue. It was cheap humor dwindling the new era that was born. Spyro's combat got really repetitive too and the slow-action screen shots as if we were watching a blandly action-packed Resident Evil or a Matrix film negatively affected my emotions as I played this game. The enemies are definitely worth fighting I give the game that, but just the placement and unrealistic physics got to me. Even when it comes to using your mind to get around the terrain, the answer is blandly too helpful in guiding you that it almost feels like the game is playing itself. Maybe I'm just too old playing a game targeted at kids. The hype of "A Hero's Tail" got me excited for another Spyro game on this console. I regrettably and sadly say I have been disappointed.

Depends On Your Stance On Spyro
PostedOctober 31, 2012
This Game was a good game in my opinion not the best but enough to call it good and worth a buy. Also Depends on how much you like Spyro what I considered was a lot of people didn't really favor this game due to it's dramatic change. To sum up a short stand point of this not really a review but just my thoughts this game definitely was good and could of been longer. The game overall felt different which is good and an all star cast which is cool. Finally I would like to say that I liked this game very much and that you might if you give it a try.

Best 6 hours I ever spent ^^
PostedJuly 24, 2012
On the day I bought this, I got it for really cheap at the GameStop in my fave mall. I get home, put it in the console, and it was AMAZING!! ^^ I had originally played the GBA version, but seeing it in better graphics just made it even better. ^^
I grew up playing Spyro, and it's been in my life forever. So I am a hardcore Spyro fan. When I heard about this game, I was pretty excited, but nervous that i would ruin Spyro for me due to a different story line(And lack of G nasty G norc) but I think it made me love Spyro even more. ^^ His voice is actually better then it was in the original, and we get to see more of Sparks which makes it even better. ^^
If your a big fan of Spyro, go get this game. And if you beat it on the day you bought it, I would suggest having more caffeine. ^^

Mixed Feelings
PostedMay 14, 2012
To be up front this game is nothing like the PS1 games. You don't run around collecting eggs or gems. The game is a rather simplistic beat-em up that also offers some bare basics platforming. This game feels like it has more in common with games like Malice then the older Spyro games.
======================
That being said this isn't a bad game in many respects. The combat is rather simplistic offering the use of various elemental breath techniques that are unlocked as you advance through the story and a multitude of basic melee combos. For the most part you will rely on the melee attacks through the game since your breath attacks quickly diminish your magic pool. You can also use a secondary elemental attack that is similar to a bomb and a powerful area of effect attack if you fill up a purple meter near your health gauge.
Musically the game offers a few tracks that are decent, but the piece on the title screen is probably the most moving in the game. It captures a sense of wonder and exploration.
Graphically the game is decent. I'm not the best judge of this aspect of the game since I'm not all that picky when it comes to the graphics. I did notice a few hiccups though where an enemy would be seen running through a wall and a few slow down issues caused by too much stuff happening on the screen at once.
Characters: Many of the characters in this game are lacking in any personality. While they have traits and fill certain archetypes you never learn enough about them to be all that interested in them. Spyro is also a bit lacking. We often see Spyro express self-doubt and later on become more confident in his abilities, but this growth feels unnatural in a weird way. I can't say that I disliked Spyro's character in this game, but it feels like it needs more development. On the other hand I found Sparx to be highly annoying and a pointless addition to this game. Sparx is highly sarcastic, but never says anything that is funny or even all that amusing. The character feels like a waste since he doesn't even represent your health bar anymore.
The main villain of the game gets it far worse though. We only see Cynder a few times during the game and learn almost nothing about her until around the last 10 minutes of the game. She also never comes across as all that powerful or intimidating either. I guess, this fits in with her origin, but it makes the character feel like wasted potential.
Stages: This game only offers a few levels which are broken down into 6 ground based levels and 2 flying levels. This makes the game easy to beat over the course of a two day period. Especially since the game offers a re-spawn feature after you die and an infinite number of lives.
Story: The story for this game is more about Spyro's origin and his journey to discover what it means to be the prophesied purple dragon. This isn't a bad thing, but it means the game is largely laying groundwork for the next game.
