The HD video is seamless and it upscales regular DVDs well. It runs quietly and saves on wear to the 360 console disc drive. All 360 functions are controllable from the remote that comes with the drive. Nearly 500 HD-DVD titles are available in this format for NA (most costing the same as a rental). I just wish I could get it with a black casing to match my 360 slim.
If your HD has to be new, go with Blu; but if you're a 360-owning HD collector, this might be what you're looking for.

The HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 is unfortunate only because if it had been built-in, the HD-DVD format might have stood a better chance against Blu-ray. But, as it is, this device is still a good buy, as it allows you to save on wear-and-tear to your Xbox 360's built-in drive (and keep a game in while playing a movie). This alone is worth the purchase. Throw in the fact that it is sturdily built and can take a lot of handling without damage and you have a solid product, even if just for DVDs. But the ability to play the hundreds of HD-DVDs that can be acquired *very* cheaply, as well as upscale your existing DVDs, means that any owner of an Xbox360 should get one.

I would never reccomend anyone buying this because its pretty much obsolete being that BlueRay is out and its gonna be hard to buy HD movies best bet is to buy a BlueRay player or Ps3 just for the BlueRay.

Blu ray is definitely the undisputed winner of the format war, and I would never tell someone to buy this instead of a Blu ray player. I will say, however, that nowadays HDDVD does have some advantages, due to the obsolescence of the format, all of the discs have become very inexpensive and if you own an Xbox 360 (or a 360 slim as I do) you can get yourself a veritable library of HD titles for as little as a fourth of the price of the Blu ray counterparts. In addition to the exceptionally low price point there are still some titles that have yet to make the jump to Blu ray, such as Steve Martins "The Jerk", Robert Redfords "Sneakers", and Robert DeNiros "Midnight Run", so if your a fan of those movies HDDVD, for the time being, is the only way to view them in high definition. From a purely hardware standpoint this drive will add a USB port to your system, and it gives you the ability to actually put an HDDVD (or a regular DVD) in this drive at the same time as a 360 game in the systems on-board drive and switch between the 2 via the Xbox dashboard, resulting in a cool CD changer type of effect (note you can not play games through this drive. just CDs DVDs and HDDVDs). On the negative side (to my knowledge) all of the web enabled and downloadable content available on select HDDVD discs has been taken down. Luckily nothing exceptionally substantial had been made available due to the fact that the format was still in it's infancy when it was forced into obsolescence. My one complaint about the hardware itself is that when playing standard DVDs the player does not up convert the SD video like other HD devices will. So if you own a 360 and you want a cheap way to watch movies in full HD this drive is for you.
