overheats too much. after it overheats it takes 2 weeks before it will function better but only for a day or 2. If you want to buy a playstation save up and buy a new one.

good system
PostedJune 14, 2012
I got this system used over 4 years ago and it never broke down on me like I never got the YLOD at all and I like this system better than the slim because it has 4 USB ports and it's also much easier to upgrade the HDD to instead of just pulling the rubber foot off and unscrewing the screw that holds the HDD in place and I also like that this PS3 has a vent on the right side and the front bottom and on the back too.

Good Machine
PostedJune 2, 2012
Originally bought one of the older fat 360s just for the fact that Splinter Cell Conviction was coming out, & I prefer consoles to PCs when it comes to full time gaming; then my son invested in a PS3 in 2011, & thought it would be great to trade games back, & forth so I got one also. I picked this refurbished model mainly for it's PS2 compatibility, & for the PS3 exclusive Uncharted game series. Another feature I didn't know about were the 4 usb ports instead of just two which is REALLY a plus.
I knew these were pretty old models so I got the extended warranty plus an external cooler. I planned to baby this unit. Worked flawlessly for around 6 months, then one afternoon I shut it down after a couple of hours of playing, & upon turning it on for another round later that evening, it wouldn't boot, & all I'd get is a blinking yellow light after each attempt.
I'm thinking it might've been my bad though cause I started getting in the habit of just shutting it down via the controller without quitting the game first plus leaving the disc inserted all the time. Well, glad I got that warranty. Returned it at the nearest Gamestop that had another one in stock. The exchange was quick, & painless. There was a game still inserted in the unit that the associate couldn't get to eject, but he still made it right with me on that issue.
This 2nd one I received is still working great, but still made sure I had an active warranty to fall back on. When that finally expires, I plan on installing a larger HD, but one thing for sure, I'll will always quit the game through the menu, & eject the disc before shutting down from now on.
On a side note I still think this model is probably the best Sony ever put out except for the small HD, & the thing weighs a ton. I think Sony should've kept the PS2 compatability, & the 4 usb ports in their newer models, but I'm sure like me, alot of people have undoubtedly pondered why Sony does what they do in some of their decisions.
Have fun!!!

The Real Reason They Break
onSeptember 11, 2012
"I'm pretty sure that the Software they put into the OS had some buggy issues causing the backwards compatible ps3s be more prone to breaking down. Still wish they could've fixed it though instead of taking it away." False. They broke down because the thermal paste was old and cracked and it failed at dispersing the heat. The reason Sony removed the PS2 backwards compatibility was simply because they wanted people to buy NEW PS3 games and not linger on older ps2 games, so they made more money. Sony even outright stated that.
