An Addicting and Fun Portable Fighting Game
PostedFebruary 16, 2009
INTRO: First off, this is a love it or hate it game. Chances are, if you're a fan of DBZ, you'll love it. Or at least find the gameplay fun. The game is essentially a Tenkaichi game lessened for the PSP. Read on for the FULL REVIEW. STORY: Again I say, if you love DBZ, you'll find the gameplay fun. The "Story Mode" is a nice "What If" situation where Babidi, Dabura, and Majin Buu appear in the timeline of Future Trunks after the annihilation of Cell and the Androids. The story is told in text. Lots and LOTS of text. No cinematics of any kind. Just character stills and bottem screen word bubbles. The Story Mode has it's own type of "gameplay" in it is ridiculously repetitive and is unfortunately the way to unlock any additional characters and transformations. How did I unlock Super Saiyan 2 Teen Gohan when he's not even INVOLVED?! That's another thing, In order to make the game continue, there are numerous "Puppets" or "Clones" that you have to fight. Whether it's to protect a cities health or your allies. It should be well noted that your allies are not controlled by you and are incredibly stupid. The Story Mode gameplay has graphics worse than a PS1 game. You fly around and encounter enemies to progress and there are conditions to pass the field and mission. Such as "Don't let any cities health fall below 30%" or "Don't let your allies lose a battle" What? Do I have to do ALL the fighting? Yes, you do. Your allies can fight too but all they're seen doing is repeated punches and kicks. Once you encounter Cooler, Broly, and Super Buu your allies are useless so all you can really do is choose the strongest characters available and hope for the best. You can aid them by finishing their fight which is what you'll nearly always do. So that rules Krillin out. The missions get ridiculously hard and unnecessary but is a must to unlock everyone. GAMEPLAY: The best part of the game. Fighting is fluent, fast, and will suck you in. It's as though DBZ games were supposed to be on the PSP. Or at least with a D-Pad. (Microsoft, what happened?) Excluding the Story Mode's gameplay, the fighting is exactly what you'd expect from a DBZ game and is well represented. GRAPHICS/ANIMATIONS: As good as they can get I suppose. Though characters seem jaggy for some reason, everything else is acceptable and passable. No real complaints here. SOUND: Geez, talk about win some, lose some. In the Story Mode, characters ONLY have voices along with their text in the very beginning of each chapter leaving me confused as to why it wasn't done for the rest of the game. There is also the option to change the voices to Japanese if that is your preferred method. MODES: The Story Mode has been well explained but there are others. Other modes include Arcade, Network Battles, and Challenges much like in Super Smash Bros. Melee. These are more appreciated AFTER you've unlocked more transformations/characters. UNLOCKABLES: Such noticeable unlockables are unexpected characters such as Gotenks, Gogeta, SS4 Goku, and even Janemba. Remember Janemba? Yeah me neither. Pretty sure he was in that Fusion movie though. Anyway, there are also Booster Cards you can buy/unlock to enhance any character in ways such as Health, Ki, Defense, etc. Though in Story Mode, you'll really just abuse the Health cards. OVERALL: This game is a very entertaining fighting game and I would overall still recommend it to fighting fans and DBZ fans alike. If you want a fun portable fighting game for your PSP, you should check this out. 8/10.

DEFINITELY NOT WHAT I EXPECTED
PostedFebruary 15, 2009
The game itself, meaning the characters and their special moves are great. Survival mode and battle arcade mode work great. But the Story Line is the worst I have seen yet by Dragonball. There is no change. You go thru whole chapters doing the same thing over and over. "Defeat Buu","don't let the city damage reach 30% & defeat buu","not one player can lose a battle & defeat buu". I mean honestly, you have to defeat the same character (in certain levels) like 6 times without losing any fight. Come on, you only control one player out of a 3 man team. How the hell do you stop the computer from losing AGAINST the computer. Especially when no matter how many times you defeat the bad guys and NOT LOSS when each time you beat one 2 or 3 more show up. Its so repetitive and gets BORING REALLY FAST.

This is one of the best fighting games for the system

It's a pretty good game for the PSP but not the best. The arcade mode is all right but the story mode is questionable at the least. It is set up in a very confusing way and it's hard to tell where you are and what you're doing. I really do like the way you are able to upgrade your character though. Its pretty actually quite innovative. Gameplay is good though. It can be challenging as you go through the story mode. A new ability is that you can use the analog stick to fly around the area. It comes in useful sometimes, providing you know how to use it. You have a fair amount of unlockables in the game and each one pays off. The game can be very frustrating at times when it wants to be. The only thing that I don't like about the arcade mode is that the money you win you don't get to keep. That sucks but overall I would highly recommend Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai Another Road.

This game is addicting and the campaign does vary if you play past the first few chapters. There are so many cool attacks and characters. THIS GAME IS GREAT!

An avid gamer
tournament mode is alright, but story mode is horrible.
PostedDecember 25, 2008
well, first off id like to say, im a fan of the budokai games. I stopped playing them for a while since i got rid of my gamcube and picked up a 360. So, when i was reminded of how much i liked them i went out and bought the newest one for my psp, i was really dissapointed. I was used to an even character balance, plenty of cool moves, and a story line to match. This game's character balance is horrible, for instance, goku is a bad fighter in this game. his moves are "low priority", meaning if another character does the same move at the same time, he will take the hit. broly and bardock have more power over any other character. And another thing, i started story mode playing on easy. now, in the "arcade/tournament" mode of this game i play on the second hardest difficulty.so i went into the story mode on easy thinking it would be a piece of cake, i could get all the characters in their final forms and just play in the tournament mode until i get bored of the game.but in the third level, i got stuck now im not saying i dont like a challenge, cause id o, but this is over the edge. the games goes from "easy" to "downright insanely hard" waaaayyyyy to fast. and every level is the same, you go in, fight a ton of enemies, (with only 2-3 lives, which is a big deal because your health carries on from match to match, and when you lose you only get half your health back.) fight a boss, and go to the next level.also, in the older budokai games, the characters had a huge array of special attacks to unleash on their opponents. in this game, theres about 4 specials per character. last but not least, you dont "buy" moves for characters anymore. you buy "boosters" to put on characters to enhance fighting abilities. its like a card game.so all in all, id recomend this to a hardcore budokai player, who only cares for tournament mode, anyone else id say look for a budokai game on another system, preferably a home console system.
