Final Fantasy II, as far as sequels go, is a passable game. However, as the series was still in it's infancy at the intial point of release, I can see the flaws of Square's (now Square-Enix's) attempt at making a Final Fantasy that adapts to the players play style. In terms of graphics, it's average; 2-D sprites can only get so fantastic, and i think that the maximum potential of the graphics has been reached. Nice, clean little sprites. The music, like all Final Fantasy titles, is great. Nothing to complain about there. But the way your characters develop is unnerving. You have two choices: use magic and get a black mage or physically attack and get a fighter. I find it hard to get in between. Honestly, I think the system of improving your characters is heavily flawed, and when approaching the end, you WILL have to grind your characters constantly to kill the Emperor. And yet, the game is still playable, and it has a place in my heart as an alright Final Fantasy title that, although it's good for me, may not me so good of a title for one of my friends. It's either a hit or miss for you. For me it has a hit, although not by much.

Final Fantasy 2 was by far the worst trainwreck I have ever experienced. Bad game because you can't level up but your sword can only rocket.

This is a classi... Oh sorry, I was interrupted by a random encounter. Anyway as I was say.. Oh, sorry random encounter. This is a traditonal... Random encounter.
I love turn-based RPGs, but this game has some very annoying features that make playing it a chore. It has the dreaded random encounters, which are made worse by the fact that combat is really slow and simple (basically either you attack or cast magic). The leveling system also doesn't work well because you can't make a well balanced character (i.e., a red mage) because when your strength goes up your magic goes down. The game also gets really hard, and not in a good way. You will probably have to grind a lot to become strong enough to beat it.
There are far better RPGs on the PSP. It may have been a great game for its time, but it hasn't... Random encounter... aged.. random encounter.. well..

Well it was good enough to play all the way through but on a scale of 1-13 (1 being the best) for Final Fantasy games this one goes to 11 back there with 11 and 13 just not up to its potential.

Final fantasy two anniversary edition is a fun game to play. It is a little different as far as experience growth goes. With this game, you get to strengthen your character by which weapon they are using. There are a number different weapons in the game, so you can ignore all the rest, and have a swordsman, or a bowman, or you can max out all the weapon skills for all your team members. This is a cool concept. The magic system in this game is a little different as well. Instead of buying fire 1, then fire 2 and fire 3, you buy or find the spell, equip it to a team member, and it gains experience as you use it. Each time you cast the spell, its experience bar fills up until it reaches the next level. I loved this concept because I didn't have to purchase a bunch of spells that I wouldn't use anymore once I got the next stronger one. This game also keeps track of the enemies that you have defeated in the menu window. Its cool to see how many monsters you have wasted, and how many you have to go. Once you defeat an enemy, it will show up on the list. You can click on the enemy and get stat info on it, as well as weaknesses. The story in this game is interesting, and the graphics on the cut scenes are very cool. I spent hours in the extra dungeons that they included in this version for the psp, and have replayed it many times. The only down side on this game that I found was instead of creating a group of heros, you are given four people that you control. This is okay, but you lose one of them right off the bat, and get many guest characters throughout the game to travel along with you. Each time, they are low on stats, so you must spend a lot of time to level them up. When you finally get your original fourth member back, near the end of the game, he is very weak, and again time is spent to level him up. (And trust me, if you want to play the extra dungeon at the end, you will need to level all the guest characters up). All in all, this is a great addition for the rpg gamers out there. Buy it, play it, conquer it.

As enjoyable as this game is, I will say one thing: aside from Firion, Maria, and Guy, don't get too attached to the characters. Basically, anyone who joins as the fourth member of the party is going to die.
