Game disc makes great coaster!
PostedDecember 4, 2008
I played this game at a friend's house, after not having played NCAA Football since the 07 version. For the first four hours of gameplay, when the game still worked, I was in football gaming heaven. On initial insertion of the game disc, the system downloads the latest patches and updates. On a broadband DSL connection, this download takes a few short moments. Then the action starts! Aside from the hideous cover art (Matt Ryan - I'm sure he's a good guy, but he beat my team 3 years in a row, so, sorry, dude), the artwork and animations are incredible. The menus are well organized, I had no problems starting my dynasty right away. I played the first three games, which were very incredible. Despite the fact that my team was highly ranked in the preseason, the fact that I was blowing away my opponents, after not having played a football game since 2006, probably means that the difficulty by default is too easy. I mean, when I tackle, I just push a bunch of random buttons, I have no idea which button tries to strip, which one dives, etc, yet I was smoking each team in succession. For the fourth game, I decided to rename a couple of key players, just the stars, so I wouldn't have to make number-to-player associations in my head. That's when my problems started. Apparently, for months, there has been a well-known issue with this game (except by me, because I don't go around reading game web site articles and forums, because I have a job an a family), where editing the player rosters make the game freeze during gameplay. Worse, once you encounter this bug, you can't get away from it. I know, because I followed the "fix" instruction's on the EA web site, which had no effect on gameplay. Customer service hasn't been interested enough in my problem, having already gotten my $edit, to help me resolve the issue, so I can't really say how good the game is, because I can't play it. It'll make an effective and pretty coaster, though, with the game disc being over 5 inches in diameter, I bet I could use it to protect my coffee table from a hot bowl of soup, even. I would not recommend this game, solely based on the fact that my issue is unresolved, and EA customer service will not talk to me, they only email me text from the self-help web site. I can't tell you how many times I've erased my game data as suggested, cleaned the disc, and not edited the player rosters in the last week, hoping that *this* time, it would resolve my issue. Spend your money on something better.

Pretty Bad, Shame on EA
PostedSeptember 11, 2008
I've been buying NCAA Football since it was called Bill Walsh's Football in the early 1990's. EA has monopolized NCAA football now and they have no urgency to improve their product. AT ALL...... Bad points: 1. Running backs still run like their wearing roller skates. NO IMPROVED GAMEPLAY or GRAPHICS.....NONE 2. Animations take over most of the game play. (tackling, receiving, Int. etc.) the game controls it.....NOT YOU 3. 1/2 of the offensive playbook is useless: ie. forget about any zone running plays, nobody blocks. I could list much more, but not worth my time. 4. Far too many INT's, defensive players come out of nowhere to intercept passes....no sense of realism, even for a video game. 5. Any special teams plays is a waste of a play. Just chaos. No blocking schemes for returns...just close your eyes and try to get lucky. 6. Holding penalties and roughing the quarterback penalties take over the game. Called at least 5-6 times a game.......can't turn penalties down for online play. 7. Online play is a STILL lag-fest...I have Road Runner which doesn't make a difference 8. Forget about classic teams, EA stopped adding them ever since 2004. EA representatives just copy and paste from older versions. For example, No Vince Young for 2005 Texas, no 2006 Florida, no 2007 LSU. Half of the classic rosters they do have are inaccurate and EA has never took the time to correct them. 9. Too much time is cut out showing doofy fans doing the same celebration animation over and over again....unless you like that sort of thing. I just keep pressing the X button to get to the next screen....good luck! 10. I can keep on going but I won't. Good Points: 1. Improved Dynasty mode 2. Juke and stiff arm does work now for the first time in 3 years. But make sure you do it 5 yards before the defender or defensive animation will just take over and tackle the ball carrier. 3. New 2008 Rosters, but they even found a way to mess those up. IE. Penn State's RB #22 is Black but White in the game, or Texas SS #21 is White but Black in the game. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU ARE OVER THE AGE OF 15!!!!

Big Disappointment
PostedAugust 4, 2008
I am a big fan of the NCAA games. I buy it every year, but this year I feel it was a waste of money and time. The d-lineman fly right through the o-line untouched and tackle the qb while he is either dropping back or getting ready to hand the ball off. It is also unbelievable how easily the backs break tackles. The receivers also fumble way too easily. I don't understand why PS2 gets the same old every year but the too expensive PS3 gets sweet new features and good gameplay. Some good features are the new tackling system and it is starting to be slightly more realistic, but I feel like the game makers just gave up since the new console is out and I don't think that is right. Can we get a good college ballgame around here? But the game is still fun against a friend, but some of the glitches and superhuman players make me mad.

Better
PostedAugust 1, 2008
The game is very similar to 08, but clearly better, updated roster and star players are more accurate, the top 25 in the game, i beleive is fairly accurate, NCAA 09 much better than 08, the graphics and the music are the same though, on the ps2 version the commentary really isn't different, and they also had some new features on dynasty mode, like strongest conferences and strongest schedules, the challenge of dynasty mode is a little bit tougher, because if you beat a team not very good by say 50, and somebody else behind you in the polls wins a close rivalry game, and you're still undefeated, you can fall 1-3 spots in the BCS Rankings. This game though is definitely better than NCAA Football 08. NCAA Football 09: 9/10 GO OKLAHOMA SOONERS
