NHL 09 is better than any other hockey game for the PC. Last year's game was terrible because a lot of people had freezing problems with it. This year, there is nothing wrong with it. The graphics this year are stunning, they're the best with Vista!! From the equipment, to the player faces, this game is just outstanding. The gameplay is great, along with an all new Be-A-Pro mode. It's probably the best improvement to the game. You can create or use an exsiting player and the camera will stay focused on you the whole time, but I would've like it better if you could be a goalie. The announcers are the same: Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson. They're pretty good, and there are a lot of new lines that are said. I really like being able to play with the AHL teams. They have very accurate rosters too. The sound is good, of course the sound of guys getting nailed against the boards!! The goal horns in this game are dead on. I very strongly reccomend to use a PC game controller with this game, it's a lot easier!! If you have one, it's great to deke and shoot with the right analog stick. Overall, this is a must for hockey fans with a PC.

They must of started on this game once the console version came out. All the PC version is, is the ps2 version with higher res (not wide screen) and better textures (but no post-Processing) with a last minute attempt of slamming in the 360/ps3 gameplay and the more animations that make it look worse it since you can tell it wasn't meant for the game engine, did i mention no physics? Vista rates this game at a recommended 2.3 system rating, .3 points ahead of Hearts, or chess. I got fooled into buying this game after playing FIFA 09 and seeing that was it was the highest quality sports game I've ever played on PC, I was thinking ea sports for PC would be good this year and they would ditch porting last gen console games to PC but only for soccer fans it looks like.

At first, I thought all of the features were the best ever with the defensive skill stick and the updated equipment. But when I got it and played it I didn't get any of it. And after a while it started to get boring. The graphics are okay. The goalies barely even move when the puck comes to them. If it goes towards the post, they just stand the exact same way and just move over a little bit. Almost two times per game the player scores on his own goal. Also, I don't understand the point of the rookie controls. It just makes the game worse for you. Before you buy a game in PC, compare it to the console version first. 'Cause this game (for PC) was just a piece of crap put together by EASports that took no time or effort to make it as good as it should be.

Very disappointing. The 360 and PS3 may be great but the PC version is one of the great video game let downs of all time. In Be A Pro mode, you can't be a goalie and you don't start in the AHL and work your way up. Also in Be A Pro mode, position on the rink is more important than in reality. There are also small errors that could have easily been patched that weren't. Example, I made a defensive defenseman. Now, if I was in the "sweet" spot of where the game thought I should be then the other team rarely scored. If I wasn't, they did. This may sound logical on paper but in practice is pathetic. On several games, the AI got a break away, If I tried to stop him, then my goalies performance dropped. According to the game, it would have been better if I had just stood around the faceoff circle and did nothing. Too often the game penalizes you for wondering away from where it thinks you should be and trying to get in the action. There were times where it was literally a foot of ice from where I was standing and where it wanted me to be that caused the other team to score. Even though all of the action was on the Goalies right side crease and I was the left defender standing at the left face off circle. Controls aren't much better, like in previous versions. You can tell the menu is made for consoles and not PC. Most of the menus feel like they require the "D Pad" of a console controller. It's PC, icons for a mouse user to click on would far more easier. Reason I give Team/Player Variety a 2 is because making up your own team is a nightmare. When you do, you are forced to select players for the team. This doesn't seem like a screw up but it fails completely when you try to sub in your team into dynasty or Season mode. The problem is that you start duplicating players. Only way I found around this is to sign players from the russian leagues and the AHL leagues as trying to do NHL free agents or selecting a favorite player can cause the duplicating. I missed the idea that if you take a team out, their players are put into your made up teams roster. This may seem cheap but its what happens when the old team folds and a new owner takes them and moves them to a new city. Fantasy draft for Dynasty or season is screwed up to. When you're trying to make a team, your total salary spent is always zero so you have no idea what you're at unless you have a calculator or a pencil and paper at the computer. I mean, come on. It's a stupid little number, how can they screw that up and refuse to fix it? Final thing I want to touch on is the scaled goalie AI. The idea is that the goalie learns on what types of shots you do and tries to anticipate it. Another thing that is good on paper but poor in implementation. If you use too many one timers, then the goalie becomes good at stopping them, too good in fact. I've played games where I outshot the opponents 6-43 and still lost 2-0. In reality, that happens once in awhile, but in this game, you can have 5 games in a row where you outshoot ~10-40 and lose because you prefer one timers. I don't care how good a goalie is, if they face 40 one timers, the chances are, atleast 1 is getting in most of the time. Statistically, 4 are getting in. Playing this game is like playing ice hockey on a video game. This game feels more like your playing Mathematical rules of video games on a ice rink.

This game is perfect for: kid gamers
like many of the other reviews i have read for this game, they are accurate. And Im going start by saying EA games have never watched a real hockey game a day in there life. Sorry. But to often in this game does it think that you are wrong and trys to auto correct you by penalize you. The game has a standard set way of how it thinks hockey should be played. It knows like 2 plays and if you dont do one of those two your not going to score and may even get penilizaed . the game is so smart its stupid. I really hate how since ive started playing NHL07 they cant show you the salary cap. Thats redic. this whole games physics are off and there forth this in my eyes is not a creditable game for anyone of any ages. Its a disgrace to hockey players, Insult to the fans, and sabotage for any new kid watching/playing this trying to learn anything about the sport. I will never buy another EA game product. Also a majority of people who play this game dont have a controller. playing this game with with a keyboard is impossible. also very upsetting that rosters are not up to date. Ryan Callahan current NYR captain, was listed as playing 82 games in the 2008-2009 yet his name is not even in the minor leauge roster here. Only somewhat good thing here are the graphics. But its about time EA games put out an NHL game where the graphics weren't garbage.

show caution

With the fact that last year many people felt shafted by the PC version of this game, I would do a lot of research into this title before purchasing, because if you're expecting an exact duplicate of the next-gen version don't even bother. Just from the back of the box, the graphics aren't the same as what is shown in the video and screenshots on this site. Not only be wary of the graphics but the gameplay as well since the '08 version was a huge difference between PC and consoles.

This will be a huge improvement from NHL 08. It's harder to play on the pc, but I love it. I have gotten pretty good with NHL08, so I hope they make this really, really hard. That would be nice.
