The Game is Just Too Short
PostedApril 3, 2011
Where to begin, I bought this game and first things first, you need a steam account to install it. That should have been warning number 1, basically put, if you don't have an internet connection with the pc you want to play the game on, it won't work. I find that very odd that a game won't work or install without an internet connection. Now, ir order to get it to install, good luck with that one, I still don't know what I finally did to get it installed. That is number 2, the installation was unorganized, and extremely confusing. You need a steam account to be allowed to play a game that you paid money for, that's a first for me. Every time you play the game it tracks how long you played and various unnecessary game statistics. In a nutshell Steam determines your gaming experience. Now on to game play. The game plays a lot like Grand Theft Auto just not so many cars driving around, and apparently in the 40's and 50's people all locked their car doors and you have to pick the lock. You can smash out the window too but then you still have to hit a button once again to get in the car, then hotwire it, and then wait for the car to start. It just wastes valuable time if you're doing a crime and the cops can freely shoot at you during this time. The weapons are cool, but all you get to use is guns, and grenades and molotov cocktails. No bats, no clubs, none of that. There is hardly no side quests available in this game, except robbing stores and taking and hocking cars for scrap. That's the only 2 side missions you get to choose from. The thing that bothers me the most about not just this game but many other games these days is pre-determined save points. Unless you're in story mode you can't save your game where you want. In story mode, many more difficult and more involved missions didn't save and you had to do a bunch of it all over again. Apparently developers think this is replay value, it's frustration value more than anything. The cars handle just fine on the road and the chases are nice. The graphics are well done, and another minus, your guy apparently can't swim, nor can you drive wherever you want, there are borders, I hate games with borders. I think this game could have been longer, took me around 3 days to complete the entire game, there are many extras if you enjoy hunting them down. My advice is do all your hunting down first, since you have pre-determined save points they only allow 1 save spot, so when you get to the end of the game you are stuck there, so you can't go back and get the extras. It's a decent game, but in the future I will be watching for this steam garbage and will be staying far far away from it. You've been warned.

Worth the money? Maybe not...
PostedJanuary 30, 2011
When I first downloaded mafia 2 I was very skeptical because I had never played Mafia 1. As soon as i started to play, I was truly addicted. This game sucks you in to the story plot and character development. At first I would skip through every cut scene without hesitation, but then I actually started to watch them and pay attention. The story is very well made, although the ending could have been seen from a mile away. As for the missions, well the first few are fun, then next few are a little fun. But then they just start to lose their buzz. Maybe it's because half of the missions involve driving some place far across town. And let me say, driving in this game is FAR different then GTA, it's more realistic. Cops will pull you over for speeding and running reds. So when you finally reach your mission destination (10 minutes later) they all go basically the same. Someone has something to do with money, or street cred, you shoot people, someone dies, and thats the mission. Although shooting people with a Tommy gun is extremely fun, it gets a little bit old after awhile. The graphics are good, if your pc can handle turnin em up, them they look pretty nice, nothing special though. I do have to say I was pleased with the shooting system in this game, the 3rd person shooting was actually very enjoyable. The gun selection is pretty standard, you can buy your pistols, shotguns, SMG's, and 1 or 2 rifles from a shop. Don't get me wrong, the guns in the game are both realistic for the time period and also very fun to use. I'm sure you know this game as like GTA, a sandbox "do whatever you want" kinda game, and thats what it is. Actually, thats in my opinion the best trait of this game. You can rob stores, steal cars and sell them for profit..well thats about it actually.. But there is a flaw in the game, THERE IS NO POINT IN DOING ANY OF THAT STUFF. Literally, the only time I robbed a store was when the mission made me. And the only time I stole and sold a car was in the first mission. This game offers no type of "side quest" storyline. None whatsoever. You complete a mission, go home, sleep, wake up to a phone (90%) of the time, you go do another mission, rinse and repeat. Theres never any need for money either, except to buy clothes. You spend the entire game getting money and yet theres nothing to do with it. I just beat the game today and I can honestly say I have no desire to re-play the campaign. There is no replay value because there is no surprise, with no side quests or anything to do BESIDES main quests, you just do the same thing over and over. And some parts in the game, I think, are MEANT to get you mad you off. There is no "save game" feature, so if you get 99% through a part in the mission only to die, GUESS WHAT?! Your doing that 99% all over again. Oh and be warned, don't try and pick a fight with the cops like in GTA and run from them and fun stuff like that. Oh no, in this game, cops will pull out THEIR tommy guns, and absolutely destroy you. And it isn't very hard to get in trouble with the police. Speed? Police wanna fine you. Nudge another car? Thats a hit and run ticket right there. Accidentally pull your gun out on the street? Haha good luck getting outta that one. The tediousness of the missions is another thing that really irritated me. Every single mission included driving, which at first I loved. I loved how more realistic the driving was. Then after it taking 10 minutes just to get across town, I started to get upset. And don't even think of crashing your car, it's not like GTA where you are like "Hey, im going to go steal this car, then get chased by the police, then ramp of this bridge, then do 17 flips, then land, then drive away." No, in this game it's "Ok i'm going to go the speed limit so I dont get pulled over. check my mirrors. No going through red lights.". Overall i give this game an 8/10. I loved the missions, when you actually get to them. And I loved the character development. But this game had it's flaws. Worth the money? I'd give this game a rent.

Good Game
PostedDecember 18, 2010
For a 2K game, this game has to be the best shooter they have made. This game is on par with GTA IMO. It has a great story line, has great appeal, and I just couldn't stop playing It. Its fun to walk around In a 3-piece-suite and grab your Tommy gun and just shoot up people in cars and other mobsters. Really good game.
