The perfect game for those who appreciate history
PostedMarch 26, 2016
Mafia II has been my favorite game since I first played it in 2012. I would've played it sooner, but I didn't have a computer or console to handle it until 2012. And from the first moment I played it, I was swept away into a story and a world that has kept me captivated for the past four years. With excellent art and sound direction that creates a convincing snapshot look at 1940s and 50s Americana, a story with great and memorable characters, and solid game-play that helps the player feel like a real Mafioso, Mafia II is one of the best games ever made. While the lack of a dedicated free-roam mode is often lauded as one of this game's major shortcomings, this is a story based game set in an open world to explore. Every city block looks and feels different from one another. There are few other games I've played where I could navigate the city so easily without using a map. Honestly, Mafia II is about as good as a game can get. It has a fantastic world to explore and get lost in, an amazing soundtrack of classic music from the '40s and '50s, gorgeous looking environments (including some fantastic looking snow-scapes that look like they've been taken straight from a Norman Rockwell painting), a fantastic story with great characters, an interesting selection of classic American cars, and a general experience that can't be beat. While it isn't as over-the-top as GTA or Saints Row, Mafia II is a game that takes itself seriously because it's telling a serious story. That being said, there are still humorous moments but they're delivered by the characters rather than the irony of the circumstance. Overall, Mafia II is the perfect game for someone who appreciates classic America, someone who loves the mob, and those who just want to spend a few hours lost in a world so different from our own with great characters telling an interesting, gritty story.

The storyline aspects/quests of this game are completed in under 16 hours of play time, there is no after story playing like there is in Grand Theft Auto either. Furthermore, unlike Grand Theft Auto, you can't ride motorcycles, fly helicopters, drive boats (you can't even get into the water, for that matter!), purchase and use rocket-type weapons, get romantically involved with anyone (for those of you interested in that sort of thing), or shoot at anyone while you're driving the handful of vehicles in this game.
