I hate ME critics!

Why do people keep saying there isn't enough rpg element in this game? There are tons of it all over the place! Looking for resources, commanding your squad, making decisions that effect the entire way the story unravels, and using spontaneous paragon/renegade actions during conversations to either calm down a situation or punch someone in the head. This game is much better than the first.
First of all the conversations flow better.
Second, There is a lot more to do.
Third, DLC is ridiculous awesome.
Fourth, It's too much fun to say anything negative (although using credits to refuel and buy probes? Not the best idea Bioware!)

A worthy sequel.

A great game. A very nice sequel to a perfect game in ME1. Right off the bat, you can tell that EA really went hands on with the combat system. ME2 is VERY combat/shooter oriented. The boundries between free-world and combat segments are more clearly defined with cutscenes and prompts. The item salvaging and equipment mods have all been done away with. Instead of players toting around hundreds of weapons and mods, the player is prompted before every mission to choose their loadout of weapons they wish to carry. The ability and EXP level up has been thinned out as well. Instead of choosing from numerous locations to spend EXP points, it is cut to just 6 or 7. (Most of which are abilities used exclusively during combat.) And your renegad/paragon dialogue options depend entirely on your alignment, instead of a "charm" or "intimidate" skill. OVERALL ME2 is a fine sequel. It will really test your combat gaming skills and its replay value is still intact. A must-have for gamers.

I picked up the first Mass Effect after playing the demo of Mass Efffect 2. I was hooked! Soon after playing and beating it, I purchased Mass Effect 2 and have not been let down. It has built upon and improved every aspect you could want. I haven't finished it yet as I'm trying to savor every last bit. Also, I'm trying to stretch it out so I finish close to ME3's release date. A great game in what is definitely going to be one of the most acclaimed series of next-gen games!

If Mass Effect is a good book, ME2 is a good movie
PostedJanuary 15, 2012
The book/movie analogy I make in my review summary was the best way I could think of to explain the differences in ME1 and ME2. Lets take a good book that was made into a movie (or a good movie that was made into a book). The book will have more detail, more backstory, while the movie will have more production value...the book might be a little rougher around the edges leaving you to fill in some of the blanks in your head, while the movie will be polished, have neat explosions, cool CGI. This explains the ME1 and ME2 difference to a large degree..... ME 1 IS a little rough around the edges. Combat is a little rough, the player-progression is REALLY super detailed and not for those with short attention spans or those that just "want to skip that nerd nonsense and just get to shooting things". The visual/sound in ME1 is AMAZING but is topped by ME2 in terms of quality. ME 2 is POLISHED but a more streamlined experience in my opinion. Less weapons. Less cool abilities and less ability to micromanage your character's skills and stats... but the combat and audio/video is more polished and more "blockbuster movie-ish". I find more people say that Mass Effect 2 is the better of the 2.... I've always disagreed, liking the deeper weapon selection/customization and player development of Mass Effect 1 (Both are in my top-10 games of all time.... it's like saying one prefers the Filet Mignon to the Lobster Ravioli....) but this kind of goes into the book/movie deal I was discussing. Most people nowadays would rather see a high-budget movie rather than read a good book. I'll take the book. I guess there isn't a "correct" choice in choosing a book or movie, it's just society and it's preferences.
I'm not going to get too much into the game itself except to say: if you are going to buy Mass Effect 2, you need to get all of the DLC to make the most of the experience. The DLC that adds extra characters and ESPECIALLY the DLC that adds new weapons are necessary to fully enjoy the game.... I played through the whole game with none of the DLC and recently played through it with all of the DLC... no comparison. You don't have a large selection of weapons until you get the "arsenal packs"... and some of the other packs include an extra weapon or two.
*** Buying the game new used to include a DLC that would cost an extra $15..... since the "New" and "Used" prices are so similar nowadays CHECK TO SEE IF THE "NEW" VERSION CONTAINS THE CERBERUS NETWORK DLC!!!!!! If it does, it'll end up saving you nearly $15. ***
All I can say is that if you like Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or just a good story or game... Pick up Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. There really isn't anything bad to say about either.... some things are better in one game or the other but both are top-10-of-all-time classics and best of all the decisions/mistakes/people-who-died-or-survived carry over from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2 and the upcoming Mass Effect 3. Large decisions such as being moral or ruthless, killing/saving squad members, even saving or exterminating an entire species might make the biggest changes from game to game, but little things like your gender, who you were nice or mean to, even who you chose to date/not date will ripple between games. That, along with the AMAZING plot and detailed universe of Mass Effect are why there is a legion of rabid fans waiting for Mass Effect 3 (at least as of Jan2012)..... if you haven't played the Mass Effect series don't you think you should see what everyone is so worked up about? I don't want to ruin anything about the story or game itself.... just do yourself a favor and pick them up.
