the good and the bad
PostedJuly 7, 2011
Let me start by saying that I have never played an MMO that I loved and hated so much at the same time. Rift has some very very strong elements going for it. 1) Graphics engine is immersive and solid all around. 2) Sound design is out of this world the sound people at Trion should be given some sort of award for this work IMO. 3) Game design is rock and roll the character design and leveling specs are what other MMO's wish they had going for them.
Ok so that all looks great, what's the problem? Well, unfortunately there are some glaring negatives to this game that drive you bananas to say the least. 1) pvp is impossible, they claim they built the game on this but that is simply not true, lack of macro support, nightmarish targeting problems and no addons of any kind make pvp and its unique type of competitiveness a major headache and I think I might be being kind right now. 2) The crowd your in (on every server I found) is beyond adolescent from what I can tell. This may not sound like a big deal but it wears on you after while believe me. The game is tight mathematically but it doesn't tell you that while you are playing ie: who is better right now in this crowd? that answer would go a long way towards resolving a lot of bad behavior. Because of that the general membership seems to be made up of people who are casted off other mmos. The immaturity level coupled with horrible play style of the general groups make you hate the lack of transparency from the game after while no matter how much you try and avoid it.
I cancelled my account after building 3 different 50s and I wish Trion all the luck in the world. An age requirement and a well placed damage meter here and there would go a long way towards avoiding this kind of thing from the start. I am joking about the age requirement obviously but it really was like "lord of the flies" out there most days.

Just Amazing!
PostedJune 23, 2011
This game is just amazing, I've been playing it for a couple of days now, and it just keeps getting better. Sure people say that the storyline kinda sucks, but it's not 'just' about the storyline. It's all about the gameplay and fun within the game, and this game has it. The graphics are spectacular even though my computer can only handle medium settings, but on them it runs smoothly. When you cast spells it actually looks like what you would cast if this was in real life, instead of what you see on wow.
Sure the game might be similar to wow in many ways, but it's not like you can have like three different classes in one character...wow sure doesn't have that.
What I really love about this game is how random it is when it comes to when Rifts appear/open, or an invasion happens, etc., wow sure doesn't have that going on in their game, no sir. I've been playing wow for quite awhile, I mean 'The Shattering' was kinda random when it came to the elementals in the game, but when that stopped, it got lame. I am a person that like random things to go on in-game, such as Rifts, invasions, etc., when a game has that in it, now that's a game, who needs a game that you've played hundreds of hours on, and have done everything possible in the game. When in Rift, anything can happen, sure it's the same stuff just randomized, but that's not the point, what is, is it's not in same place all the time.
The visuals in the game are spectacular, I mean your seeing catapults launch different type of fire-balls into the air, and all sorts of awesomeness like that. Mainly the background to the game is amazing, you practically see everything that is going on, plus it feels like your in an actual battlefield like you see in the movies, instead of games that have the same amount of people on each side, type of battles you see in games, nope, an actual battle is going on right before your eyes in the background, can't get better than that; well not just battles you see in-game, you'll see other spectacular scenery in the background; kinda makes you feel like your actually there instead of boring stuff going on that you know 'it's a game'. Not just that, but when your in a forest you can see the sun shine through the trees, the water is awesome...the graphics on the game are spectacular. It's about time they came out with a MMO with epic graphics.
The sound is awesome too. You hear screaming in the background, the music is engaging, etc., the sound is awesome in this game.
All in all, if you have a decent computer or better, and are getting sick of wow (but still want that wow feeling, just more epic and awesome), Rift is your game - A game that is staying up-to-date with the graphics of today, instead of a game with graphics of like 4 years ago.
A must buy for a gamer that wants a change and a different feel too MMO's.

Move over W.O.W!

The class is system is very diverse in this game. There are many combinations you can chose for each class. The talent trees (souls) make a class all of it's own. It makes wow's look like c%%p. The graphics are pretty good, but cra%%y if you have a s%%ky graphic card. Pvp is amazing! Compared to WOW's battlegrounds it kicks a##.

Best Themepark MMO To Date
PostedMay 12, 2011
Rift is by far the best themepark mmo yet. It takes everything games like Aion, Lotro, and EQ2 did right and does them better! Rift is very polished and super fun. Highly recommended to any fan of the genre.
