It is what you make of it

The leveling is nice for the casual gamer and I had no problem breezing to 50 with a combination of PvP and Questing. The PvE is okay, you need to get geared just like in WoW for the good stuff. The PvP is great, but it is competitive and if you do not invest the time, effort, and practice required you will get stomped and hate it.

Great graphics, fun to level, then discard...

The leveling experience is quite fun as well as the PvE content, however I would not recommend for anyone who even casually does PvP. It will get old very quick, and brings nothing to the table in terms of group play except for typical healing versus non-healing teams dynamics. There are no classes devoted to immobilizing enemies, and every class is a offshoot of the other in terms of jack-of-all-trades type gameplay. The worst part is that the game is filled with kids and as such you will have to basically ignore everyone else, so it takes the MMO part out of the MMORPG when people are simply constantly presenting the "U Mad Bro" and typical kiddie type lines. There are many exploits and the customer service is pretty horrible at resolving or even acknowledging them and so you will likely be on your own. Basically it will be an immersive game until you reach max level, then there is not enough lasting appeal given the above negative factors. For someone that ignores multiplayer aspects I would give a higher rating to them as these elements will not be bothersome.

A Passing Fancy
PostedApril 27, 2011
Played this game several times in closed beta, and was intrigued. Played if for a week after it went live and things started geting stale. Do not play this game if you hate grinding. Questing seems to be the only way to level at a decent pace, but this gets boring after the first hour. I found this game to be a button masher simular to Age of Conan, so playing it passively is difficult. One major concern I had with this game, was the complete randomess of the Rifts. Frustration set in after repeatedly getting killed to random events that come at you out of nowhere, and blanket any and all safe points on a given map. You could get killed, respawn, and immediately get killed again by the very same mobs as they destroy the camp you just revived at. The story is great, but not good enough to keep my interest. The game does take all the great elements of other successful MMOs, but it simply feels too much like a cheaper version of them all.

This game is fine if you're VERY new to MMO's and like super simple gaming. The content is weak at best, events are horrid and "Souls" are nothing but aa's from EQ1 or talent trees from WoW. Waste of time and money, my guild is glad to be done with it.

I'm Hooked

This game does have a World of Warcraft feel to it and there are an incredible amount of similarities. What sets this game apart from other MMOs is the party system and the customization of spells and characters. Just experiment with the classes and find what you like. It took me about a day of fooling around with them all to finally settle on a mage. Whats really cool is that you can earn all the souls(talent trees) in your class and switch them out any time you want. You can have up to four talent presets to switch out for different situations. Its like having four different characters without having to roll and level a new one. I'll be playing Rift for a long time. Yodabaad on the Meridian shard.
