Updated Review: Update 1.2 is on its way!
PostedFebruary 29, 2012
Previously, I gave SWTOR a 10/10. Three months later, it still gets a 10/10. For anyone MMO fans curious to this game, Bioware is doing a FANTASTIC job at listening to their customers and are pumping out constant updates. Next week is Guild Summit, an event in which BioWare employees will sit down and talk with actual Guild Leaders about what else could be added to the game. Several people have complained that there is no end-game content. There IS end-game content. What people are forgetting is that the game came out only three months ago! Bioware already released Update 1.1 awhile back which included more end-game content. Within weeks, they are going to release Update 1.2 which will include more end-game Flashpoints, new warzones, more story quests (and side-quests), more crafting, and the Introduction of content for the Legacy System (which will unlock new abilities, speeders at lower levels and new species to play as!). If your inpatient about waiting for more end-game content, there are 7 more stories to get through! The more characters created and leveled up, the more awards for your characters will be unlocked for when the Legacy System is implemented. Bioware is also doing a great job at providing the fans with mini-updates weekly that help with more content and customization. If Bioware continues to provide updates like this, this game will be very successful!

Good game but could be better
PostedFebruary 28, 2012
I own and love all of the Star Wars games that have been made. This game is an awesome continuation to the Old Republic Xbox games. I enjoy SWTOR because it is perfect for soloing or people who like to work with a team. The story closely follows that of the "feel" of the Star Wars universe. There is much work to be done to make this game great though. Crafting and selling of items is mundane and distant to the character. Good luck with the galactic market too. My main concern is the lag. My computer is not old but still struggles with nearly every encounter and forget about going to cities quickly. I have encountered numerous players in game with the same problem. Overall, good not great, make sure your computer exceeds requirements before purchase.

New Generation
PostedFebruary 23, 2012
Now when I first saw this game I tried to lower my expectations knowing how LucasArts is but I payed close attention just in case it would be the amazing game we all hoped for and clearly it was even though hardcore gamers may finish it at at around even six days which was actually disappointing considering how much longer the story could have been but this game is truly a work of art although no game can beat the Knights of The Old Republic this game is still way worth the price and i recommend it to all gamers out there who dreamed of living in their own star wars saga as a child.

SW:TOR, from an MMO Veteran
PostedFebruary 23, 2012
Before I go into any more detail, I'll start with my summarized opinion: Star Wars: The Old Republic is not perfect. That being said, as an MMORPG veteran that has played over a dozen different MMORPGs, Star Wars: The Old Republic is by far my favorite MMORPG out of all that I've ever played. An important fact to remember about SW: TOR when approaching it is that it is an MMORPG - a game type that is constantly updated with fixes, improvements, and new content for players to enjoy. It is a dynamic game franchise that is always being added to.
The tradeoff for this type of game is a monthly subscription (something that is present in all triple A MMORPGs). The subscription price for Star Wars: The Old Republic is $14.99 per month (there are also payment options for every three or every six months), and the subscription can be canceled at any time without penalties. Another important note is that this price is the same for other popular MMORPGs. (MMOs such as World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan, and et cetera all charge fifteen dollars a month for a subscription to their game.) Now, to the casual console gamer unfamiliar with the MMORPG franchise, this would seem quite silly. I felt the same way when I was first introduced to the genre. However, this is not really the case. A new release single-player game can be bought from approximately $59.99, and will usually last a gamer between fifteen to thirty hours of gameplay before the game is completed and the gamer loses interest. An MMORPG offers hundreds of hours of gameplay with continually added content that was not present in the game a month before. This means that the MMORPG franchise offers gamers weeks, months, and even years of potential gameplay: along with the added bonus of playing with friends every step of the way.
Now, onto SW:TOR specifically.
Gameplay: 9/10 The gameplay is familiar and tried and true, but has enough original elements that make it distinctly Star Wars: The Old Republic
Anyone who has ever played an MMORPG or RPG on a computer in the past will be familiar with the way Star Wars: The Old Republic works. It’s a very simple system that is practically universal across computer gaming. Even for those not familiar with the controls and the gameplay mechanics can easily learn through the in-game tutorials that gradually introduce each of the game-play elements to the player as he or she plays.
SW: TOR is the first ever, fully-voice MMORPG. What this means is that every character in the game: The player character, the quest givers, the companion characters, even the random environmental NPCs are all completely voice acted by professional voice actors. No more reading dull text boxes, no more drawn out, unclear objectives. The player character is always directly in the action, even when not in combat, by engaging in cinematic conversations in which choices are made as to the direction and outcome of the conversation by the player. Anyone who has played either Mass Effect installments or the newer Dragon Age 2 games from BioWare will be familiar with the way these conversations work and how choices can lead quests and mission in many different directions and to many different endings. And again, with the presence of friends to play alongside – these conversations are multiplayer and a group of up to four players can participate in the same conversation and make their own choices that direct the conversation as it unfolds.
Another interesting element that is new to the MMORPG scene is SW: TOR’s companion system. Similar to “pets” in other MMORPGs, companion characters are characters gained throughout the player character’s story that can be called to aid the player character fill “roles” of a group party that aren’t there. This means that there is a vast portion of the game that can be played by one’s self rather than with others if that is the players wish, or that the companion characters can fill roles in a group so that time is not wasted searching for other people to play with.
Graphics: 8/10 Style may not appeal to all, but the quality is still high
The style direction taken by BioWare for Star Wars: The Old Republic is what has been dubbed “Stylized Realism”, giving the game a distinct almost comic book like feel, while still appearing realistic and believable. The style does not appeal to all, however the decision for this style is two-fold. The graphics style chosen by BioWare ensures that the game will age better. Five years down the road, the game’s graphics will still be adequate where a game focused on strict realism would be obsolete.
Sound: 10/10 Excellent quality sound, music, and voice acting
There is little more that can be said, other than the sound quality is fantastic, and is difficult to describe in words. All throughout the game, Star Wars fans will recognize blaster, starfighter, lightsaber, and music scores that they heard in the movies – along with entirely new music scores and sounds original to Star Wars: The Old Republic that fit perfectly in the Star Wars universe.
The voice acting is excellent, and the dialogue is written expertly. Those paying careful attention will recognize voice actors such as Steve Blum, Jennifer Hale, and Johnny Yong Bosch. While playing the game, it is very easy to imagine seeing the writing and voice acting in a professional work of cinema.
Lasting Appeal: 10/10 Limitless opportunities
I rate the lasting appeal of Star Wars: The Old Republic as being ten out of ten because the potential for the game is limitless. Being an MMORPG, the game will continue to be developed upon and content will continue to be added. Currently, the game is still very new and is only several months out of launch. As the years roll by, new content expansions will be added – significantly increasing the available content for players indefinitely.
In summary, Star Wars: The Old Republic brings with it the potential to be the next great MMORPG of our time, and is already showing signs of just that as it has already become the fastest growing MMORPG to date in the history of MMORPGs. I highly recommend it to fans of the original Knights of the Old Republic series, Star Wars fans, and general fans of the MMORPG franchise. I personally waited close to five years for this game to release, and it exceeded every one of the expectations I had. I can honestly say, that after playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, I will never go back to any of the MMORPGs I played in the past simply because, in my eyes, SW: TOR is more enjoyable. I have never enjoyed an MMORPG more.
