Parental Warning - REQUIRES MONTHY SUBSCRIPTION
PostedDecember 26, 2011
Bought this online. Son tried to run it on Christmas day and realized that a $14.99 monthly subscription is required to play it. Could not activate the 30-trial because it required a credit card which my teen does not have. I never would have paid $70 (software, tax and shipping) if I knew that a monthly subscription was required.
As I reviewed the GameStop site today, neither I nor a GameStop CSR could not see anything about a subscription being required. There is, however, a disclaimer in tiny font on the software case that I can barely read with reading glasses that says "Valid credit card or paid game card (if available), internet connection and paid subscription required to play game."
Kudos to GameStop Customer Service. They agreed to let us return the opened software for a full refund. That's really good customer service.

To all complaining about having to "pay" for a sub to get the free 30 days, it is not a requirement. All that is required is to sign up for a subscription after which it is very simple to immediately cancel said sub and remove your CC info from the website. Once the 30 days are used up, the account will lapse until/unless a game card or reactivated sub is used. I hope this clears up some confusion.

solution
onJanuary 2, 2012
there is a solution where you don't have to use a credit card. Usually mmo's have a pre-paid card u can buy at a local retail store that has them game-stop has them also. They are similar prices that which you pay on the internet (ex:$30 for 2 months) I'm, not positive that you need to add the credit card too but i saw that it was an option on the subscription plan page so if you don't feel comfortable about giving your credit card number away or just want your kid to pay for it then you can try this. If not simple delete the subscription before they charge you and you can still have your 30 day free trial. I've done this and been happily playing. Hope this helps anyone in concerned.

Bad Review

I understand that you are a parent and that you dont fully understand how games like this work, Star Wars: the Old Republic is an MMO (Mass-Multiplayer-Online) and all MMO's need a monthly subscription. I dont think because you were unaware of this that you shoud give this game the rating that you did because this is a great game and you giving a misleading score is unfare to the readers and to the game company.

I will assume you have never purchased an MMORPG as every single type of these games comes with a monthly subscription. If the CSR at the Gamestop where you do business did not realize that there was a subscription fee you should probably look into a different store and notify Gamestop that they have people who are not knowledgeable about their products. Your 1 of 10 review is worthless review as you are simply upset about not doing any research into the product.

It's a MMO
onDecember 29, 2011
Most MMO's aren't Free-2-Play, and definitely none of them are as big as this game. It was common knowledge, maybe not on Gamestop.com, but to everyone else, that this game was a monthly subscription...

Re parental warning...
onDecember 29, 2011
I knew from past experience that this would require a monthly subscription, however I was very angry when I tried to install the game to try my "not so free 30 day trial" I had to add a credit card, or game time card. I could easily have used one of those but I wanted to try my 30 days to see if I liked the game. I came to 2 conclusions. 1. they want to make as much money in the first couple of months as possible (Well duh we're talking Ea here) and 2. they don't have much faith in the game. Personally I want to like the game, and I will play it but I don't like the idea that I have to pay $60 for the game, then another $30 for a 2 month just so see if the game is worth the time investment. Very dissapointed so far. Only time will tell if my mind is changed.

Fell bad for that Kid..... parent paid 70$ but was to cheap to buy a time card or use a CC to get the 30 day trial atleast.

I sympathize for you, I too forgot that a subscription was necessary. However, it is standard practice for all MMOs to give you 30 days with the game but still requiring a subscription. However, giving this game a rating of 1 because of being ignorant of this fact is not fair. If you were referring to the actual game that would be different.

i dont mean to be rude but the game is a MMO and all the MMO's you can purchase in store all require a monthly payment with a valid credit card or you need to buy timecards

Star Wars: Old Republic is just like World of Warcraft. It's an MMO (Mass Multiplayer Online) which means that it is going to require a subscription. This is how they can afford to patch the game to make it better.

This is a type of game kinda like world of warcraft, but the story changes depending on the choices you make. you get a ship at lvl 15 if you stick with just the class quest. if not it's lvl 25-30. you get ur first companion at lvl 8 which is when you get ur lightsaber if ur a sith warrior or a jedi knight. you can get u to 5 companions who will do what you tell them to. you can also send them to do ur own crafts while your not on or while ur questing.

they really hit the nail on the head with this one, as long as they keep out the quality and fix some small things this game will be around for a long while...
