When I first started playing this, I was like this is an amazing game. Sonic is fast, he controls pretty good, and the levels are great. Then I played it again just last week. I was taken by surprised when I realized that I didn't enjoy it as much. I will be reviewing the four review aspects of the game and I will conclude with a final verdict. Gameplay: The Modern Sonic gameplay IS NOT THE SAME as Sonic Colors. Although it is very similar, the two games feel very different. Sonic Generations has a great sense of speed when it comes to moving foward while using the boost, but you don't have much control when it comes to turning. Now I know that the fanbase is probably gonna go crazy about this, but I feel that it was a neccesity to use the boost to blaze at a decent pace. When not using the boost though, he feels very stiff. Not in moving foward of course, but moving left and right when not using the quickstep ability. I wanted to see if I could just go through the level without using it and see how it feels. It's not a good feeling at all. It seems like all I have to do is use the boost and I beat the level. Now Classic Sonic is a very different story. When people said that the Classic Sonic stages felt like playing the original games, they exaggerated a bit. He does play well, but the time it takes for him to speed up and start his awesome foot animation is a bit lengthy vs the original games. That is excluding Sonic 3 and Knuckles because that game plays different from Sonic 1 and 2. However, that doesn't mean that the classic stages are bad by any means. He has fluid controls and it is a breeze to play his levels. Though sometimes his jump was a little weak, I really enjoyed the levels. Which brings me to the stages of the games. The stages are really cool in the way that they are composed, but some levels feel like the transition from 3D to 2D was forced. Mainly in stages like Speed Highway and City Escape, I feel that they did not even need the 2D sections and that they were put in so the game would have some platforming. There were also not enough levels in general. There are challenge acts for each level, but most of them don't hold anything better than the main stage. The wisps make a return here too. They were for exclusively the Planet Wisp stage. It's cool to see them back, but to newcomers it might not appeal for you are expected to know how to use them. Also when you get Super Sonic, you'll be fairly surprised at the results. I actually consider this a downgrade in some cases. Classic Super Sonic is fun to use at times, but Modern Super Sonic can end almost as soon as you get him due to the rings being sucked up faster by using the boost. Graphics: Just like in any Sonic game, the graphics are smooth. It's good to see how far Sega has come presenting the game with their awesome graphics. All of the modern characters are well done as usual and I think they did a good job of remastering the classic characters. Levels are straight up gorgeous and the time and effort put into them really show. Sound: The aspect of Sonic games that always remain intact is the soundtrack. The Main stage music are remixes of the old ones and the classic and modern stages have a different remix. These were really well done and I would love to see them do this again in future games. You also have the choice of changing which song you would like to hear during each stage. This helps dissolve so many headaches when replaying a stage. From the classic chip tunes to the modern tracks of Crush 40 and others, you have a huge selection of songs to choose from. I like this option a lot, but i feel that some of the tracks could've had a better loop sequence. Lasting Appeal: Guess what else makes a return? That's right the Red Star Rings. Red Star Rings are collectibles to help increase the replay value of the game. They are relatively easy to find and characters you've saved will tell you where to look if you're having trouble finding them. The levels are fun to replay on their own for a while, but you may get sick of only playing 9 levels and 4 bosses. They also have a pretty cool secret when you unlock it, but I am not going to spoil it. Final Verdict: The game is what I like to call a mix bag. Although Sonic is fast, you don't get the feelings of other games. The game of course is not bad, but I feel it missed some crucial points that Sonic is about. If you are the person where Sonic must run really really fast, go ahead and buy this game. But if you are a Sonic game where he is about platforming and being rewarded with speed, then I say go look for another game in the Franchise.
