I grew up playing Sonic games on my Sega Genesis and have been disappointed by the recent Sonic games (with the exception of the DS titles and Colors). Sega has FINALLY listened to us and given the fans a true Sonic game. Gone are the corny gimmicks, the warehogs, the swords, the idiotic wonky cameras. This is a true throwback to the golden days when Sonic was about collecting coins, running fast and finding secrets. The game features traditional "old school" Sonic (running and jumping) and Dreamcast era newer Sonic (running/homing attack etc). The levels are recreations and reworkings of some of the greatest levels in Sonic history so the music and the visuals will bring a smile to the faces of people who can remember them. Controls are fluid and fast (unlike the problematic Sonic 4 controls) and the sense of speed is finally captured correctly. Tons of unlockables and secrets will keep people busy long after the campaign is finished. GREAT GREAT surprise and one I'm very happy to recommend to people who have been dying for a real Sonic experience. Awesome job by Sega and hopefully the keep it up.

Hopefully Good Story

The concept for this game is brilliant! Take Modern Sonic with his Unleahsed/Colors move set in 3D stages and put Classic Sonic in with all his abilities from the first 3 Sonic The Hedgehog games. What's truly awesome to see is Classic Sonic in 2.5D that's HD! The thing that has me slightly worried is the story. Sonic Colors nailed gameplay but completely bombed out on story. Color's plot was simply childish and not one bit serious! So far this game's story is mostly unknown, other than some unknown villain is messing with the fabric of time and this results with Sonic having to team up with his Classic-self. With only that much of the story given, there's certainly enough room to make the plot great or drown it in the kiddie pool (I just hope that it's the first one)!

This game is perfect for: kid gamers
I have been playing Sonic the Hedgehog since the very beginning. Through 16 bit era of the Genisis all 4 games, Sonic 1, 2, 3&Knuckles. through the 3D Dreamcast era to Gamecube era. It was Sonic's golden years, but when it hit next gen consoles, i was really disappointed. But when they announced a 20th anniversary game. I was really happy that they are remaking the classic and memorable stages in HD. Classic and Modern Remixed music you'll absolutely love. Classic Sonic is a walk through memory lane of nostalgic memories of the 16 bit genesis days. This game is full of nostalgic memories of Sonic. The biggest memories you remember in Sonic games you will feel nostalgia running through your veins. I sure did. But, this game isn't perfect. There are some complaints,
I'll start off with Modern Sonic gameplay, The gameplay is so broken, so clunky you want to slow down, but hes too fast even walking is hard to control him, If you get to a few more levels you'll just want to replay your favorite stage instead of the previous that you can't make. cause you'll fall over and over again from the speed boost. Keep in mind that its the same gameplay since Unleashed and Colors, but sort of unbalanced. I started to lose interest when i reached the Sonic 06 stage that reminded me how horrible that Sonic game was 5 years ago. But enough about that it was my experience some maybe won't happen.
I absolutely loved the nostalgic stages and remixed music. Playing as Classic Sonic is a big blast to return to the 90's sonic gameplay. I recommend this to any sonic fan. A must buy for Sonic fans, Absolutely for Classic sonic fans. But i think other gamers would rent the game and see what they missed out for 20 years.
The final verdict for Sonic Generations, is a 7.25 out of 10.

Pray for Sega

I really hope this brings Sonic back into mainstream videogaming. Sonic has been replaced nowadays by first person shooters and music simulation games. Sonic games since 2006 have been getting a bad rep. as well. I think we as gamers are to blame partly, because alot of people have just given up on the franchise. Which leaves Sega to make more Sonic games geared towards new kids. Nintendo is doing the same with Mario right now. The only difference with Nintendo and Sega is Nintendo is playing the right cards with their games. Throwing classic Sonic in this game is awesome and I hope the game is successful. By the way Sega, MAKE SONIC ADVENTURE 3!

Sonic Generations. Just about brought me to tears. If you ever liked a Sonic game, from any era, you will be hard-pressed to dislike this game. Each level is based a zone from past Sonic games. Here, you can play either as "Classic Sonic" (as seen from 1991-1998), rolling through the levels in 2D side-scrolling fashion; or "Modern Sonic" (as seen from 1998 onwards), racing through the stages in 3D. One level from every major Sonic game is remade in Sonic Generations.
The fairly simple plot is concerned with the fact that during Sonic's 20th birthday, some dark creature crashes the party and takes away all of Sonic's friends. As Sonic chases after them, he finds they all have traveled through time. The mysterious being is some "Time Eater", wreaking havoc across history. To stop this threat, Modern Sonic teams up with his younger, "Classic" self.
The resulting game is fantastic. All of the levels and boss battles are beautifully rendered, featuring multiple pathways to the goal. Classic Sonic plays very closely to the way he played in the early 90s, and Modern Sonic plays like he did in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. The result is not only a great variety of level design, but also well-thought-out gameplay physics. And the music, oh, THE MUSIC! Sonic games are known for great soundtracks, and this is no exception. The remixes presented here are beautiful (Rooftop Run, how I love thee!). Classic Sonic features remixes in a early 90s techno style (in many ways mimicking the 16-bit limitations of the SEGA Genesis), while Modern Sonic features more layered, rock-inspired (no, NOT Shadow The Hedgehog style. More in line with SONIC UNLEASHED (WII)).
Now as a gamer, I think this title is excellent. It is high-quality, fun, and light-hearted. As a Sonic fan, however, this game is nothing short of EPIC (even though the main story can be beaten in under ten hours. Shame)! There are so many homages to Sonic's history spread throughout this game. Not only are past titles referenced, but even (albeit in subtle ways) the classic TV show Sonic The Hedgehog - The Complete Series and the comic book series are hinted at. The story is full of in-jokes known throughout the series and fandom. Plus, as you play, you unlock various bits of music from the past. These music tracks can then be selected to play during ANY LEVEL OF THE GAME! This just adds to the variety presented here.
This game, of course, is not perfect. Maybe 95% so, but like anything, it still leaves room for armchair quarterbacks to leave "helpful suggestions". Here's me being an armchair quarterback (and I don't even like football!).
Every once in a while, while traveling at high speed or transitioning to another portion of the stage, a momentary (read: fraction of a second) freeze of motion is seen. It is not common, but when it happens, it is noticeable.
On some occurences, slight framerate slowdown is apparent. Now, for me, growing up playing Sonic on the SEGA Genesis, where this was fairly common, playing "Sonic in slow-motion" was something I thought was awesome as a little kid, so even this has a tinge of nostalgia for me.
The story, like with Sonic Colors (being that the same writers worked on this title), is still very light-hearted. Nothing ----I repeat----nothing, is wrong with that. It was not terribly executed in Colors, and it was even more enjoyable here. The fact that this game's story ties directly to Sonic Colors just makes me smile with happiness (narrative continuity in a series Sonic title? Amazing!). I'm still holding out for an "epic" storyline like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 featured.
The game, though detailed and fairly expansive, can be completed in under ten hours (story mode). To collect all of the little souvenirs and unlockable skills will take some more time, but all in all, this is a relatively short game. Again, I'm missing that Sonic Adventure series "epicness"!
In the end, I am blown away. Now, I've spent to much time here already----gotta get back to the game!
Happy 20th Birthday, Sonic!

If you're like me and have been a lifelong Sonic fan, through the good and bad, this game is a must have. Sega really didn't overlook any game in the Sonic franchise and did justice to classic levels that we all grew up with and added innovative and fresh ideas. My only minor complaint is that the physics in the side scrolling classic levels still aren't perfect but a HUGE improvement over Sonic 4. There is a ton of variety in this game. Both level styles are fast paced and challenging. The music is AWESOME! Hopefully this game can be a formula for future Sonic games because I think Sega finally got it right. I think fans of classic and modern Sonic games will both be pleasantly surprised with this game.
