Looking Good!

I had the privilege of having a beta key and played for a couple of months. The game play was smooth, and the graphics VERY enjoyable. The player vs player features were much improved upon by the time beta came to a close.
The online concept here is to level up your city. You gain exp by going on "quests" (campaigns). These designed either as solo-able, or some require cooperation from other players. These PvE quests are nice for those that don't want to PvP all the time. I'm looking forward to the release! Attached is a screenshot of my navy hitting my enemy's city during PvP!

Age of Empires online is a great RTS game, first let me explain why the reviews are low. The original fan base grew accustomed to more realistic graphics.... that's about it folks GRAPHICS! Really? See to me it's all about the gameplay/replay value! Not how pretty it looks! Look at games like Minecraft... ya graphics are nice but mean very little really. NOW onto why this game rocks. It successfully combines traditional RTS strategy with a mmo feeling to it. The quest system is similar to games like WoW and so is the equiping gear that gets better as you level up. You can craft and even have a main unattackable town that you are free to customize. It's FREE TO PLAY! There is a ton of content available to those who don't pay EVEN the ability to unlock things as time goes on. After a month or so you can easily start to buy things with in game cash. Or just drop 9$ on one civ. OR just buy this or the other packages that retail around 35$ and unlock a huge chunk of the game. I like the colorful graphics and so should you! Game on!

Age of Empires Online does not live up too the name. This one does not include other Ancient civilizations compare to the first one. Like China, India, Carthage, Hittites, Rome, and Macedonia. In AOE online you can only play 6 civilizations Greek, Egyptian, Celt, Persian, Babylonian, and Norse. As you notice or played the game its very cartoonist. The game it self is some what like World of Warcraft. You have to equip you're units before battle. Once you do quest and level up you're city. You will get and earn more powerful equipment. You can also craft you're weapons. Its free to play but you are limited to what you can do. You can't equip any rare or epic items, you have limited inventory space, some units aren't available, and more. You have to buy items and all that. You also need a live id in order to connect and play at all.

Age of Empires Online has not lived up to what the previous games laid a foundation for. The Age of Empires Online game claims to be free, but allows you to only play as certain civilizations, with limited advancement unless you play as a premium user. This is a demo, not a full version, free to play RTS/MMORPG. Even if this game was free, which would make me much more appreciative of it, this game would still be a disgrace due to mocking the original Age of Empires, as well as Age of Empires 2 and 3 with its disgraceful cartoon graphics. The out of proportion bodies, the lack of color detail, and grit that the previous games had, has been stripped down to non-textured, color splashed, jagged individual pawns, that prevent you from feeling that you are in command of an army.
This game has been a disgrace to the Age of Empires legacy, and a slap in the face to the community.

Succeeds if the game from the retailer can deliver some kind of better quality than the digital counterpart which is free to download. Fails if, well, it does the exact opposite and is simply the same as the FREE digital version.

The game has 2 versions of most civs, a free limited version, and a paid full version. When you buy this, you are buying the premium Greek civ plus a poster, box, exclusive ingame shop, and some cards for the exact same price as you could get just the premium Greeks online (plus tax, however - unless you buy it somewhere without sales tax, of course).
If you want the premium Greeks, this is probably the way to go, due to the same price and little extras. But if you don't want it, you can still play them in limited form for free.

This game has the title "Age of Empires"; however, this is far from the truth. The online action is sad at best, and for true Age of Empires players that have played through the series I, II, and III, this game will be a horrible let down. This is not to mention that the graphics are cartoon and I don't know how that is supposed to coexist with a WAR game. For those real Age of Empires fans, wait and hope for AOE 4 to bless our computers.

Great RTS with the ability to play PVP and co-op. Would give a 10 but there have been a LOT of problems lately. The most annoying of which is getting disconnected half way or more through a quest, and the Celts which have been "coming soon" since like August 2011. They are gearing up for some major changes, and I am confident they will be successful at fixing the bugs and making the game even better. Will change my review to 10 when/ if this happens. All in all, lots of fun. Best part is that it is free to play... but well worth the Microsoft points to buy the premium civilizations.

Before you buy this you can download and play for free. This key unlocks 2 things: The ability to use blue quality and above items on the Greek civ, and a store for your capital to buy special items. This is the ONLY key released to retail, and I THINK it's the only way to get the special store. There are MANY other DLC choices in the Games for Windows client (it's like Steam for M$ games), including $100 for everything released now until winter, and $40 for both Greek and Egypt civs + all the decorations for free. Choose wisely. I bought this!
