Great Game, Multiplayer Needs Work
PostedDecember 15, 2011
This item was shipped quickly, and I received no later than a week after it was released. After having the time to play the Campaign, Spec Ops, and Multiplayer Modes, I feel as though I have enough knowledge to create a full review. I will start off with a break down and review of each of the 3 Modes listed.
Campaign Mode:
The campaign mode is simply playing the story. In Modern Warfare 3, you resume right after the events of Modern Warfare 2. You play as a total of 4 characters in this game. While I found the campaign to be very short, only taking me about 5 hours to beat the game on Hardened, it seemed that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games really put in the effort in the Campaign. The graphics are great, the IW Engine runs very smoothly, and the story is fantastic and filled with many surprises throughout. My only complaint for the Campaign Mode is that it is too short.
Pros:
+Great Story
+Great Graphics
+Smooth Engine
Cons:
-Too Short
Spec Ops:
In the Spec Ops mode you have the choice to play either the Survival Mode or the Missions Mode. In Survival Mode you face wave after wave of enemies with increasing difficulty from one wave to the next. It is very similar to Zombies, but they have guns. Also, as you earn experience points you level up, being able to choose more guns, support (such as Predator Missiles, Air Strikes, and Recon Team). You also have to face off against Juggernauts. In the Missions Mode, you select and play short missions earning experience points along the way. Something I found to be very interesting in Spec Ops, is that you level up your rank. Each kill you get is similar to Multiplayer Mode, You get XP per kill and Bonus XP for completing challenges, such as Rampage and Streaks. Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games has put a lot of work into Spec Ops and it definitely shows. In some missions however, I found that you can simply run through the enemies blockade to the finish without dying, I am not sure if Infinity Ward put this in on purpose or if it is something that may get patched in the future.
Pros:
+Great Missions
+New Survival Mode
+Able to Rank Up
Cons:
-Ability to Run Through Enemy Blockades
Multiplayer:
This is where my good review ends. I have found a plethora of problems in the Multiplayer Mode. In this mode, you have the ability to go up against other players around the world. There are may new things/rewards the IW has included in the Multiplayer Mode this time around. Instead of reaching a max level of 70, they extended it to 80, to give players more time to play around. Also, instead of unlocking attachments for weapons at certain levels, you can select a gun and rank up that gun the more you use it and the more kills and challenges you complete for the gun. Each Primary Gun has a max level of 31, in which to obtain Gold Camo. For Secondary Weapons, it depends on the type of weapon you chose. They have Machine Pistols, Pistols, and Launchers. They have added many new guns to MW3 and have updated the old ones. I like the idea of being able to rank up your weapon as it gives each player the opportunity to master what ever guns they chose, which helps each players own skill type. Also, IW has added something called the Prestige Shop. In this shop you are able to purchase several things with tokens. A token is earned for every CoD game you have prestiged in starting from Cod4 and for every time you prestige in MW3. You can purchase things such as:
Extra Custom Class - you no longer have to prestige to earn an extra custom class for your gun load-outs
Double XP - instead of waiting for Double XP Weekends, you can buy this and start leveling up faster
Double Weapon XP - With new weapon ranks, you can buy this to start leveling up your weapon faster
Regular Package - Basic Call-signs and Titles
Unlock Gear (My Favorite) - instead of waiting to reach a certain level to unlock a gun, you can use this token to unlock it instantly, and it carries over to the next prestige without resetting
Hardened/Veteran Packages - More call-signs and titles
Reset All Stats - Once you have reached prestige 10, you can chose this to start all over again
Now on to the bad stuff. While, IW was making their Campaign and Spec Ops quite amazing, they seemed to have left out Multiplayer as there are many problems that one can only hope will be patched soon. First of all, I want to state that I am a Playstation 3 Gamer, and some problems may only be on this console. The first and main problem that I have found in playing MW3 is the Hit Detection and Lag. I do not know if this is a big problem on the Wii, PS3, and XBOX, or just the PS3, but it is a big problem. While I am shooting at a stationary camper, some of my bullets will not be registered as hits. This effects close combat situations in the game because it is causing me to miss kills that would either wise have. There is also a problem with the Connection. I know this to be a problem mainly for PS3 Users. While in the middle of a game, almost 6/10 times, I will be disconnected from the host. I hate this problem because if I happen to be on a hot-streak, I don't want to be kicked out of a game for the connection, or lack thereof. The last problem I am observing has also been present in the past Call of Duty Games. It is where you throw/shoot a grenade, shoot a missile, or throw a throwing knife, and as you are doing so you die and whatever you just shot/thrown disappears. For example, if you take out your RPG and shoot it into a group of people, but before he hits you die, the missile disappears and no hit is registered. I found this quite nerve racking as this example has happened to me several times, preventing me from adding a few more kills to my KD.
Pros:
+Ranking up Gun
+Max Level increased to 80
+Prestige Shop
Cons:
-Hit Detection Missing
-Lag (mainly for PS3 Users)
-Disappearing Missiles/Grenades/Throwing Knifes
In Conclusion, Modern Warfare 3 is a Great Game, with an amazing conclusion to their story. With a Great Campaign Mode and an Amazing Spec Ops Mode, you will have your hands busy for a while, plus they are very fun to complete. Even though the Multiplayer needs a lot of work, I am sure that with upcoming patches and updates, this mode will be much more fun. I have had a great time playing this game and can't wait until I am at 10th Prestige level 80. If you have like/loved the previous Modern Warfare game, you will love this installment of the series. I highly recommend buying this game, even if you have not played the previous ones.
Here is my overall Pros Cons Recap:

Don't worry...
onJanuary 11, 2012
I have purchased MW3 Hardened Edittion on the 360 (Since they get the add-ons first, but I also own a Ps3) and even went to the midnight release with a couple of my friends. All of the things you have mentioned negative for online like the lag and hit detection are all on the 360. My other problem with the Call of Duty franchise (I know people will dislike me for this) is that the online isn't all that diffrent since MW1. Yet still to say that this is still good, just not as great as it used to be. So as I was saying all of these issues are on the 360 and Ps3.
