After having a traumatic experience with Demon Souls, I was expecting another terrible experience with this game. After dying for about a few hours, I finally got a hang of the game and made significant progress with the main story. This game lives up to its promise, you will die and die a lot. However, that gives the game a hardcore RPG experience unlike any other video game. If you are looking for an intense RPG, then this is for you!

Demon's Souls
Posted 1/25/12
I don't know if you'll read this, but I have a question. You said you had a traumatic experience with Demon's Souls. I'm struggling with Demon's Souls right now, not because of the difficulty, but because I just can't get into it. From the small bit of Dark Souls I've played at a friend's, it seems I might like Dark Souls more. When you said you had a traumatic experience, does that mean you didn't like the original, but like Dark Souls? If that's the case, I think I'll try Dark Souls out.

I love this game. I've played on 9 different characters and accumulated over 300 hours of play time. At first, I almost quit because of the challenge. Then I realized I was just being an idiot and I wasn't playing the game correctly. The graphics can be iffy in the Blighttown area, but that's it. The PvP can be laggy but that's something I don't care about. You're going to die. You're going to lose a lot of "souls"(currency in the game). You think losing your 2000 souls and 1 humanity is a big deal? Try losing 99 humanity and 3.5 million souls, then you're allowed to complain. You're going to die over and over again before finally realizing "Wait this is how to beat this guy!" You're going to kill the boss. You're going to feel accomplished. You're going to get your face smashed in by the next area because of your confidence level. Don't complain about the challenge. The back of the case literally says "Prepare to die". If you aren't expecting a challenge, you're just an idiot. This game is really not for the faint of heart. It's a challenge that most people aren't used to (meaning it's harder than recruit mode on CoD). I just can't believe how many stupid people gave this game a low rating. They clearly didn't play it while expecting a challenge. Definitely would recommend this game. I'll leave you with one piece of advice: Prepare to die!

Both Demon's and Dark Souls take me back to the early days of gaming. The days when developers DIDN'T rely apon mindless violence and cliche servings of "adult material" to distract the consumer. A time when developers made games to challenge as well as entertain, when the game itself (rather than the developers expensive lifestyles) is what mattered. Demon's and Dark Souls are definately NOT for the shallow instant gratification types. The only entitlements here are challenge, sorrow, anguish, and death, anything else you have to earn with wit, skill, and relentless devotion.

Definitely a breath of fresh air in a market saturated by repetitive games. Upon starting this game you will realize that you get virtually no help, which can at first turn new players off from the game, but after getting used to the game play, navigation, and combat you'll realize that this is definitely one of the best games you'll play for the PS3.

I'm a causal gamer that is increasingly getting more into games. Dark Souls is one of my bf's favorite games so I decided to try it. It is really difficult at first because it seems daunting. You should get familiar with all your buttons and controls, early on in the game. Also know how to use your menu in the top right corner. Just experiment, that's what I did. Once you get the hang of it, it's not as hard as it was in the beginning. It's a game that requires patience and you have to work for your reward. It is not self explanatory so you really will have to think, amd figure it out. But definitely give this game a try but don't give up! -Linda <3

ILikeIt
You will either like this game or hate it. It's challenging, but with enough play and practice, you can overcome anything the game throws at you.
The game takes place in a dark fantasy realm. There are bizarre and devilish creatures to battle and environments that will kill you. The game constantly builds a sense of dread and tension.
If the dark creatures weren't bad enough, other players can invade your world for vengeance, to honor an oath or just to be hostile. Try to locate a spirit willing to help you do battle, learn to fight better or run!
Do I enjoy this game, despite all the challenges of play? Oh, yeah.

Such a great idea for a game and near perfect execution. Definitely takes some time and skill. Not a game you can just walk through without being touched. And in no way is everything handed to you so be prepared to work and figure things out and on top of that be prepared to die over and over and then maybe a little more after that. However a real feeling of success comes after accomplishing a task. The feeling of unity and solidarity with the other players on your server is a nice touch as well. They may be unseen but they walk the same path you do through Dark Souls.

This game is perfect for: hardcore gamers
If there is one thing you need to know before buying this game, it is that Dark Souls is not like your typical game nowadays. There is no easy difficulty, there is no standard saving system (the game is constantly autosaving so you cannot undo mistakes), there is a lot of dying however. Dark Souls is a game you would expect to see on the SNES, not the PS3 or Xbox 360 where games such as Skyrim are rather generous to the player. So, even though Dark Souls is one of the best RPGs around, it is not for everybody. Those who are willing to take on the challenge though will be reward with a memorable gaming experience. The gameplay is obviously the best part of this game. You start off choosing between 10 classes ranging from Warriors to Pyromancers to Clerics. You level up your character by using souls (obtained from killing enemies) and shape him/her the way you want to play. Consulting a wiki or other guide can be extremely useful as a weak character setup will surely get you killed quite a bit. With your character you will battle many enemies and fight in many epic boss battles as you progress. You can also fight these enemies with other players by summoning or being summoned. The cooperative part of the game is very well done and helps making getting through bosses easier. If more a challenge is wanted, PVP also exists where you can invade or be invaded by other players. Once the game has been beaten, a new game plus (NG+) can be started where the game's difficulty is increased further. This makes second (and third and so on) playthroughs very enjoyable. Despite the gameplay being so well done, Dark Souls is not perfect. The graphics are nothing fantastic although the game is certainly no eye sore. The minimalistic plot is also somewhat forgettable but it does go well with game so it is hard to consider that a con. If you are looking for a game that will push your skills to the test, Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls, Dark Souls spiritual predecessor) is a game you should certainly check out. If you are of the faint of heart, stay away or prepare to die.

If you pass on this game for $20 you are making a mistake! I have played though the game 4 times and will play through again no questions asked. Not as hard as they want you to think it is but not a breeze through game either. I do recomend the strategy guide as some things may be a bit difficult to figure out and it shows you valuble items locations, and its really cool you can bar code scan with your phone from the guide and get a walkthrough video.

Overall this game is good, it's got some decent combat, nice environments and some great graphics. It also is very frustrating at first and at first I mean the first 10-20 hours, but the second time you play through it's a breeze. A few things I did not like about the game are the story, the linear level design and the terrible PvP. Starting with the story which by no means is superior to any other western style RPG story, there is no decision making, the few NPC's mouths don't even move when they talk and the ending cutscene is about 10 seconds long (Keep in mind this game is 50+ hours long!) Secondly the game is VERY linear. This is not some huge open world rpg game like Dragon Age or Skyrim it is a very linear game. And lastly the PvP is just awful. Weapons and armor are extremely unbalanced and most people use stamina boosting rings and super heavy armor types while spamming cheap magic attacks and hitting you with their one hit shield busting lightning-enchanted ultra-great axe.... If you do emerge victorious from a PvP battle about 30% of the time you will receive hate mail from your rival. The PvP is by far the worst part about the game. I know I've said a lot of bad things about this game but it is still a decent game and it's still worth giving a try just don't expect it to be the "Skyrim killer" that all these fanboys make it out to be.

I got this for the 360 after my BF3 buddy started playing it religiously. I got… maybe 10 hours through the game, which took me about 50 hours to do, and I had all I could take. The game itself is simple and straight forward. I prefer a bit more complexity, but every so often simple is refreshing.
The game play and mechanics are solid enough. The camera angle can be a bit of a pain, but still manageable.
The main reasons this game took me so long, and that I returned it, are as follows.
1. The game is amazingly difficult. It’s not like “oh that boss is hard” it’s hard to explain. Imagine going through skyrim, or borderlands, or some other rpg with something that says (all stats are reduced 80% throughout the whole game). You always don’t have enough fatigue, health, speed, weapon damage, money, etc. Weather you are a lvl 1 in a lvl 1 area, or a lvl 30 in a lvl 30 area. Skyrim and borderlands you die a lot at first, but later it balances out right? I stopped at lvl 30… my friend says there are 300 lvls, and 2 playthroughs, so maybe it balances out later, but after 50 hours, I was done.
2. I bought two copies of this for my roomie and I to co op. This game is very different when it comes to people joining the same game. 1st, a complete stranger can join your game at any time, kill you, and steal your souls (experience/money). It adds a sense of danger, extra challenge, and it’s satisfying to do it to someone else, but that gets reallllllly old reallllllly fast when you are the victim. For whatever reason, you can’t be in parties while in game. I’ve never heard of or seen a game that you can’t use basic ingame xbl dashboard stuff with. I keep in touch with a lotta friends via headset on xbl, and communicate like “hey anyone want to play battlefield” rather than writing a dozen different msgs, etc.
3. When it comes to co op…. it’s just… short bus special, to put it nicely. Typically to join someone’s game you go to their gamer tag, then do “join session” or “invite to game” right? Some games like Fable III, you invite from the in game pause menu, but it’s straight forward. This game is extremely picky about who you invite, when, where, how long, etc. 1st, you have to be in a spacious zone, but outside of a safe zone. Because when you join, you (the guest) can’t go into a safe zone (used to lvl up, spend skill points, etc) but the host can. 2nd. To invite you have to place a “summoning stone” down. You don’t even get it till lvl… maybe 20ish. Which was a good 30 hours for me, 45 hours for my friend. When placed, it won’t appear for a while. Like I said I play with my roomie. Which means 2x xbox’s, 2x tv’s, 2x games in the same room. So I can see what goes on from my screen and his. My friend on xbl that got me into the game says “when summoning it is always placed in a random server, so sometimes you have to drop it several times before it appears in the server your friend is on”. It typically took about 13 drops per invite (about 20 minutes). While this isn’t that bad… heres the 4th point.
5th, when either of you die, the guest leaves the game. This means any time one of you die, even in the middle of a boss battle, even if the other player only needs to hit the boss just once to finish it, the fight ends, and you are both returned to your own safe zones. With how much you die, co op is pretty much pointless. Video games come very easy to me, and for the most part same with my friend. Battlefield, modern warfare, halo, I’m always in the top 3 on the score board, typically the very top player. Yet I die none stop in this game. I don’t mind a challenge, but this is beyond ridiculous.
I highly recommend getting this instore used. That way you have the “7 days if you don’t like it return it for full refund” option… I’ve never used this option, but for the 25$ game x2 (50$ total) I was quick to return it. Without the possible option of refund, I can’t recommend this game at all. Unless of course you enjoy a game that you die a lot, go through the same zones dozens of times (due to dying) etc.

I absolutely love this game, bought it 5 days ago and I am happy to say it is exactly what i expected from a game that tells you on the box that you are going to die again and again and again, and this game and its predecessor both do something that i think should be done in more games it actually punishes you for failing, needs to happen in more games, it gives the game a sense of urgency. i would not recommend this game to people who are casual gamers or who only play video games for the fun of it there is nothing wrong with these two groups of people this just is not the game for them (unless they really want to challenge themselves.) all in all a great game for people who like really hard games

Let me just start off by saying this game is a complete steal for less then $30.
I was a little worried about buying this game at first because all of the reviews saying its sooo hard, and its the hardest game ever made, i agree it is definitely one of the tougher games I've played, but if you die, you don't feel like the game is unfair, it's hard to explain but you know it's your fault..
if you are curious I would buy this game pre-owned so you have a week to return it, just in case its not the game for you.
But I've had it for 3 months and I still love it.

No other game that I have played can capture so much of you and draw you in the way Dark Souls can. The music and atmospheres you travel through will eat at you throughout the game but the reward of succeeding where you have failed pulls you through and leaves you addicted. This is possibly my favorite game of any console, right up there with Castlevania Symphony of the Night. I tried this game when I was in the middle of Skyrim and have yet to play Skyrim again (160 hours in atm about to finish). Instead of playing Skyrim when I beat this game I will be buying Demon's Souls in hope that it is close to as good as Dark Souls.
