I like to think myself an accomplished RPG player, But in the recent years every RPG has been a let down, I used to be a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series, from 1-12 I played and mastered them all, spent 243 hours on 10 alone. But I was tired of the lack of challenge any of them presented. Dark Souls is a compliment to everything an RPG should be. It vast, completely customizable, has more weapons and armor than you could possibly want, optimization is not a key factor in this game. I like that yes they have certain weapons and armor that are considerably better but they are not "THE BEST" in the game giving you a full range of who you want to become in the World of Lordran. Love the plot lines for the NPC's the game is just amazing. Most of all I like that theres little direction, and most of all i love the difficulty. Gives you a real feel of achievement.

I'm still in the process of beating this game but after 45 hours of gameplay I feel I am equipped enough to write a decent review. If you have read any review besides mine I'm sure your well aware of the difficulty of this game, so I'll try to offer some fresh insight to the games experience and why its not as great as everyone claims. This game had tons of features that are a complete mystery to beginners unless you look them up online. I spent hours wondering why white smoke rings appeared out of nowhere. What the difference between being undead and human meant for my character. why do I keep seeing ghosts, and why are there bloodstains everywhere,
These questions might be basic but are only mildly annoying in comparison to even more simple questions you might have later such as "am I going the right direction" or "where can I find a spell vendor"? I even got so desperate for answers I read the user manual (nearly useless) . Its also worth mentioning this game has no pause feature. Never mind this is the 21st century and pause features are simple and easy to include. If your near an enemy and you spill your coffee or any other nuisance you can either set your paddle down and die or continue with annoyance.
I also found the lack of NPC interaction very depressing. You spend hours in dungeons and minutes talking to NPC's. Part of the joy of RPG's is when you walk into town and sell your gear and get new and better abilities and equipment, yet with this game I have yet to see a town or village. I would even settle for a vendor to sell me spells or allow me to sell my items (after 45 hours I have only had the option to purchase 4 usable spells). Instead I face a perpetual dungeon, the only relief I get is when I enter a new type of dungeon.
Lastly I would like to say that several reviews which persuaded me to purchase this game claimed that you have great variety in your character builds, but when it comes down to it, I didn't feel the same. Either your character is a spell caster, a melee class or a mix (hint: you probably will end up a mix or melee due to lack of spell options and limited usage). I originally wanted to be a spell caster but after 20 hours of gameplay and not finding any new spells I was forced to invest as a melee player. As for range, agility, defense your options are limited to fit a range that makes your character useful.
Now that I have cleared the bad air I might add some of the pros of this game. despites the games difficulties its still pretty addicting. Its gameplay reminded me of NES cartridge games that were nearly impossible to beat but just as hard to put down. The online features are interesting and original. to genuinely enjoy this game you must either be a hardcore gamer, or you are a bored and patient person who needs a lot of their time occupied. If you are prone to tempers with games purchase an addition controller along with your copy and enjoy.

This game is claimed to be really hard, but really this is how difficulty should be when a game wants to be considered a hard game. The game makes you pay for your mistakes which in turn makes you better as long as your learning from them. If you can get past the difficulty the game is a one of a kind experience on the 360 (until the sequel comes out) with truly deep game mechanics and interesting lore. The story is very vague and you must pay attention to details of the items to piece the story together if you really care to learn more about it (or you can just look up epicnamebro on youtube). One thing I should note is that there is a part of the game that really chugs graphically and is almost unplayable and that is in blighttown. It is skip-able by taking the master key as your gift or by playing as a theif. Overall this is a fantastic game and is in my top 3 for best games on the 360.

I will use a metaphor I often use for food for this brief review.. I happen to like spicy foods of all kinds, trying new things, getting to try all the different ways that something can be made hot to the taste, and still flavorful. That being said, foods that are spicy for the sake of being hot, but don't have good flavor, arent as great. DARK SOULS is the latter. Its painful to play, punishes exploration and dying is enough to make you want to scream every time it happens. The funny thing is, I died 80% of the time in this game to level design (falling through floor boards, character weapon going right through an enemy and falling to my death, etc). The only people that like and will defend this game, are those that think difficulty equals value, which as Dark Souls shows, does not. If you feel like playing a game that is difficult for the sake of difficult, this game is for you.

THE GOOD: Insanely hard gameplay, very rewarding to win. GORGEOUS graphics; when you enter Dark Souls, you can't help but get sucked in. The world is dying, your not making things better, your just a hapless passerby in the visceral decay of the world. The game really is seamless, it feels like an old school arcade RPG. Combat for PvP is also kind of intriguing, I would have loved to see more multiplayer here, but it's definitely not something that can be just be added. <<<THE BAD>>>-----LORE- This game's lore really BLOWS. It's very cool and NOTHING feels out of place...but remember when I said get sucked in? you get sucked in to almost nothing. The developers give nothing a real backstory, character motives are all flat, and really the meaning of any one thing in the game is subject to infinite possibilities, which I take as a lack of effort on the developers part. <<<TEDIOUS>>>the fact that you respawn with all your enemies too means that you get to repeat the same tedious process over and over, you learn exactly where each baddie is, how to kill him, where to position yadda yadda yadda. You'd think the decay would keep the enemies broken and dying, but they come back fresh, and just as tactically stimulating as the last time you fought them; hardly. The only thinkgs I would call great are the boss fights- I love dying in those because they make me feel like I really am on the verge of death, not because I timed move x at time z incorrectly for the 100th time. But the repeat combat does sharpen your moves <<<THE VERDICT>>>The game I guess is designed to feel immediate, in the moment, and if so, which is achieved with flying colors. The developers do this at the expense of the background in the game, basically stripping the game of any potential to flourish outside of this games short (in terms of content) story mode game. I'd say it's a must try , but I'm going to play it till I get sick of it, which is within a month, then dump it.

This game is not for the faint of heart. If you just like playing Skyrim and other RPGs not on the hardest difficulty, then this isn't for you. This game takes difficulty to a whole new level. You may think I'm stupid when you play the beginning and it isn't that hard. Once you get to the Taurus Demon in Undead Parish, you'll know what I mean. Throwing bosses at you one after the other! There is no way point, so you must figure your own way. The combat and controls are very good, and the Replay value is super high. You're gonna keep play New Game +++ just to get more loot and more challenging enemies. It feels so rewarding just to kill a boss! The music and sound is actually pretty good, but graphics could be better. The environment and enemies look great, but the human models could be better. Other than that, this game is definitely worth $60, let alone $20. Go out and buy it. You won't be disappointed.

WARNING: if you buy this game do not expect to live long. If you get really angry if you die a bunch do not buy this game please. The gameplay of this game is okay the only thing I don't really like is that when ever you "pause" the game you don't actually pause it. If your are in a fight and want to use a different weapon you will still be fighting in your inventory. Also when you heal yourself, all the characters you have killed come back to life. This is a hard game. But if you're up for the challenge I would recommend buying it.

I've been playing RPG's my whole life. None have ever hit the perfect note like this game has for me. The mood is perfect. The storyline minimal, but mysterious & very interesting with hidden paths leading to more lore of the world. The battle system is all skill based & takes perfect timing. If your timings off even the lowliest enemies can take you out. The online is a strange pseudo MMO with people entering & exiting your world. The boss fights are frightening & some of the most challenging I've ever experienced in my life. But one warning, do not expect this to be a cake walk. If you play games like The Elder Scrolls you'll probably rage quit in the first few hours of the game. It is relentless & requires more than just hacking & slashing away at enemies. But if you want an awesome game world full of secret areas & hidden treasure with terrifying enemies guarding them. This is your game. I would recommend anyone playing this game, but be prepared for many deaths. If you can take the punishment you will love this game.

Dark Souls is a fantasy world RPG that is extremely challenging yet rewarding to play. At the start of the game the player assumes the role of any of several different character classes which include the knight, bandit, thief, different wizard like beings as well as several other unique groups. Each individual class is unique and is equipped with special powers or weapons. On my first run through I used a knight which allowed me to use a bunch of different types of swords and shields throughout the game. The game is very hard, but once you get the feel for it the difficulty seems more manageable. Dark souls forces the player to be more intelligent in their decision making and requires a ton of patience in order to play through. When you first play the game it will make you feel like a puny weakling who basically gets crushed by any and all enemy types, but as you progress the ability to level up your characters attributes as well as the discovery of better weapons will only increase your chances of besting any enemy in your path. Gameplay- difficult, rewarding, and ultimately awesome. Controls- are a little slow to react at times which can only get you killed more often. Graphics: the graphics are good except for a few minor spots, but overall the game has a dark, foreboding, medieval/fantasy feel to it. Sound: great Replayability: definitely yes

When i started playing this game i though i would die but i didnt i beat the first boss in one try well i watch some guides before i played but still the first level is easy next you get put into this big world and its prettyy overwhelming at first but then you start adventuring in whatever direction you wanna go you start mastering the contols knowing when to wait and strike knowing when to block and sometimes knowing when to run away from certain enemies because you dont have the sufficent skill and yeah you might die in the process and lose some souls but its not a big deal trust me everyone was saying i would die alot and not really i kept my shielld up all the time dodge rolled alot and did some farming for weapons armor and to level up my strength health stamina and weight so i hope i help you guys and dont listen to all the people talking about it being mindlessly hard you just gotta analyze every enemy and know when to strike all you need is common sense and patience and remember you can use guides on were to get strong weapons or were to set out first this doesnt make you a bad player it helps now im not saying to using all the time but if your stuck or have some weak weapons then year use a few youtube guides or ign guides or even get a stratgey guide just try out the game you will like it its only 20 bucks for a year old game! This is a great, challenging experience. It is the most satisfying and rewarding video games I've played in awhile. You just feel great after defeating the easiest of foes. If you don't mind dying too much (and I mean a lot!), you should purchase this game. Especially for the low price of 19.99!

The gameplay is not hard at all. The only challenge I found was trying to control my character. When you push a button to swing your sword it seems like it is delayed and you will find yourself swinging it more times than you pushed the button. The movemeant is slow and not natural, and the rolling feature with the wrestling move is out of place in a game like this. I have played harder games that were well made. If you want a hard rewarding game just get Skyrim, put it on the hardest setting, get a broken remote controller, and "Prepare to Die". This game could have been great if it wasn't plauged by poor controls.

So lets define insanity shall we? Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different if not better results, well that is the core emphasis of Dark Souls, from the 20+ hours I mistakenly decided to invest into. Now granted I only paid a mere 20$, only because I deliberately waited, based on those mixed biased feedback from others prior to my own discovery, hense my 4 rating. (why it recieved a 9 makes no sense to me) Sure the all around graphics, general design and background layout were truly a beautiful thing to see vs all other RPGs out there that retained the ho hum dull blend of contrast and colors, but it still wasnt enough to keep me from returning this title post haste. The sound effects alone were unnaturally obnoxious, be it wading through pools of water or grass. Now I'm not going to bash too much, at least not with bladent disregard towards those of you that love spending hours and hours of gameplay only to die die and die again, no matter how much you may try to change up or likewise better your tactics with fighting even the simplest of baddies, only to lose all your souls (currency) or any humanity already used on your character, having it restart too far back just to struggle through getting your retrieval of souls back, and thats only IF you dont die again in the process. The one main reason why I decided not to keep Dark Souls wasnt even because of having that early staged disadvantage, or even the annoying targeting system, that more often than not lead to seeing my character fall to his death off a cliff while trying to evade or roll. And forget about attempting to block with the shield, that only worked when you werent getting pummeled with no chance to defend yourself, no matter how many times you gracefully mashed the LT(parry) or LB button. No, it was justifiably due to the fact that there is no pause menu, no manual save feature and no option to sell anything accumulated (if you were lucky enough to get that far) to the very first merchant you come across (undead burg) but yet being charged ridiculously large sums of souls just to possibly equip with better armor and/or weapons to fight even that G*D***ed demon creature lurking underneath the city. Seriously what is 3rd person RPG when you cant even pause the game for a much needed time out in between dying and hoping not to, come the 100th profanity of sailored words spewed forth at the tv, short of wanting to break the game in two, In which case I almost did upon standing straight up as if my a* was on fire. I wont even divulge the very notion of the awkward control scheme. However, it did have an interesting level up system to where you could micro manage your stats by the numbers, based on the souls you did have anyway, and the customization at the beginning was expansive, more so than other RPGs be it Two Worlds or Divinity 2. So with all that said if you are that hardcore gamer with infinite gold plated patience that wont be affected by the insane preset difficulty level or even lack of traditional menu access or save feature that I think would have been a given crucial element, saving you from pulling your hair out from starting over again, and less of a detriment to hinder any decision from not being quick to return this game, this game isnt for you. I do not recommend it simply because of the basic features and/or options for any RPG, that was for some half brained reason left out on purpose, just to add to some needless tension of realism.

ok first off i am addicted to this game. This game is difficult, but so rewarding if you stick to it. This rpg has great graphics, and sound, weapons and spell system is great if you know how to get some of the secret weapons. only drawback for me is the online play, you cant just find a friend to play with, this game is a lot trickier about that. again very challenging, but sooo worth it!

This game is amazing both visually and game play wise. It is obviously very challenging, but just as much so rewarding. This is definitely in my top 5 games, and if you don't already have this masterpiece, GET IT NOW!

I got this for the 360 after my BF3 buddy started playing it religiously. I got… maybe 10 hours through the game, which took me about 50 hours to do, and I had all I could take. The game itself is simple and straight forward. I prefer a bit more complexity, but every so often simple is refreshing.
The game play and mechanics are solid enough. The camera angle can be a bit of a pain, but still manageable.
The main reasons this game took me so long, and that I returned it, are as follows.
1. The game is amazingly difficult. It’s not like “oh that boss is hard” it’s hard to explain. Imagine going through skyrim, or borderlands, or some other rpg with something that says (all stats are reduced 80% throughout the whole game). You always don’t have enough fatigue, health, speed, weapon damage, money, etc. Weather you are a lvl 1 in a lvl 1 area, or a lvl 30 in a lvl 30 area. Skyrim and borderlands you die a lot at first, but later it balances out right? I stopped at lvl 30… my friend says there are 300 lvls, and 2 playthroughs, so maybe it balances out later, but after 50 hours, I was done.
2. I bought two copies of this for my roomie and I to co op. This game is very different when it comes to people joining the same game. 1st, a complete stranger can join your game at any time, kill you, and steal your souls (experience/money). It adds a sense of danger, extra challenge, and it’s satisfying to do it to someone else, but that gets reallllllly old reallllllly fast when you are the victim. For whatever reason, you can’t be in parties while in game. I’ve never heard of or seen a game that you can’t use basic ingame xbl dashboard stuff with. I keep in touch with a lotta friends via headset on xbl, and communicate like “hey anyone want to play battlefield” rather than writing a dozen different msgs, etc.
3. When it comes to co op…. it’s just… short bus special, to put it nicely. Typically to join someone’s game you go to their gamer tag, then do “join session” or “invite to game” right? Some games like Fable III, you invite from the in game pause menu, but it’s straight forward. This game is extremely picky about who you invite, when, where, how long, etc. 1st, you have to be in a spacious zone, but outside of a safe zone. Because when you join, you (the guest) can’t go into a safe zone (used to lvl up, spend skill points, etc) but the host can. 2nd. To invite you have to place a “summoning stone” down. You don’t even get it till lvl… maybe 20ish. Which was a good 30 hours for me, 45 hours for my friend. When placed, it won’t appear for a while. Like I said I play with my roomie. Which means 2x xbox’s, 2x tv’s, 2x games in the same room. So I can see what goes on from my screen and his. My friend on xbl that got me into the game says “when summoning it is always placed in a random server, so sometimes you have to drop it several times before it appears in the server your friend is on”. It typically took about 13 drops per invite (about 20 minutes). While this isn’t that bad… heres the 4th point.
5th, when either of you die, the guest leaves the game. This means any time one of you die, even in the middle of a boss battle, even if the other player only needs to hit the boss just once to finish it, the fight ends, and you are both returned to your own safe zones. With how much you die, co op is pretty much pointless. Video games come very easy to me, and for the most part same with my friend. Battlefield, modern warfare, halo, I’m always in the top 3 on the score board, typically the very top player. Yet I die none stop in this game. I don’t mind a challenge, but this is beyond ridiculous.
I highly recommend getting this instore used. That way you have the “7 days if you don’t like it return it for full refund” option… I’ve never used this option, but for the 25$ game x2 (50$ total) I was quick to return it. Without the possible option of refund, I can’t recommend this game at all. Unless of course you enjoy a game that you die a lot, go through the same zones dozens of times (due to dying) etc.
