Fun with friends, but it has flaws
PostedFebruary 3, 2012
This game is alright, if you and abunch of friends want to hang around eat pizza and whale on each other with shiny weapons, it fulfills that task more then well enough. But for returning fans of the series, you're apt to be dissapointed. Arcade mode is a sham, there are no character stories, nor even any endings, and story mode is a convoluted mess that explains nothing that it actually set out to do. Add the removal of classic characters who've been around since the series inception like Seong Mina and Rock, with no reason as to why, or even a replacement for them, and new characters with no story or connection to the ongoing mythos, and the game quickly pales to previous entries.
Combat for the most part is simplified, which is both good and bad. Characters that took thought to use, like Ivy and Siegfried, are now as prone to button mashing as characters like Talim and Maxi were. The game also punishes defense play style even more, with guard impacts now draining your special meter, and guard breaking much easier to pull off. The Critical Finishers are unbalanced aswell, with characters like Nightmare capable of oneshotting much of the cast with his, while others like Maxi barely do a quarter asmuch as that.
The special goodies are fairly decent though, the art book is beautifully done, the collectors case is better then any I've seen in recent games, the sound track is as well done as ever, but i could take or leave the making of DVD.
If you're a diehard fan of the series who HAS to own everything Soul Calibur, you'll probably enjoy the collectors edition. But if you just want a quick fighting game to grab and spend a few hours of your weekend on with friends, stick to the basic version, or another entry into the series, like SC2.

Worst Soul Calibur Game
PostedFebruary 2, 2012
Unresponsive controls, inability to string basic attacks together, AI that even at the lowest difficulty setting is at times impossible to beat, real lack of any focus on the single player side caped off with a boring and predictable story mode. The player roster in this game is also greatly reduced from previous games in the series, leaving out a fair number of characters. Character creation does retain a lot of the options from previous games, however it removes the character building (IE strategy considerations) that were present in Soul Calibur IV. Multi player is what you would expect, however my biggest complaint here is that you are only able to sort by ranking and not by true skill level, ie search for only beginner opponents, or search for only advanced players, etc.
Save your money and do not buy this game, it is not worth the cost at current.

Worst game in the series
PostedFebruary 1, 2012
If your like me you play the soul calibur games because of the well developed story and large cast of interesting charecters and in 3 & 4 the creation mode i am a long time fan so it pains me to say this but this game manges to basicly ignor every thing that made these games great it's story mode has only three playable charecter that the player doesn't even get to pick from unlike the others in the series it feels like we are stuck with two new and painfuly cliche charecters and a bunch of palet swaps of the charecters that we wanted in the game it's gameplay and graphics are what we expect but there is just no subpstence behind them i recomend you just get soul calibur 4 and hope that the excutives tell the team off and make them ignor this game and move on to 6 and fix this i can only call it a cheat
