This Operation Has Failed

RE:ORC is proof-positive that the RE series has given way to more "mainstream" gamers. Ever since RE4, the series seems to have abandoned the scare factor established in previous games (pop-scares, limited ammunition/saves, etc.) in favor of establishing a more action-y RE, with plenty of weapons, ammo, zombies, and Quick Time Events. Recently, it feels as if the series has lost that immersive quality to it that has hooked its players from the start, and it's painfully obvious now that we're playing an "action" game, not a "survival horror" game.
The reason? Action games are more often than not the best selling games today, and therefor, are less of a risk for producers to fund than survival horror games. By changing the gameplay to gear more and more towards the mainstream, RE is able to release more games, but at the expense of seeing the series itself turn into a zombie. Today, that effort of slowly mainstreaming gameplay of the once horrific and amazing series culminates in the physical form of RE:ORC.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't entertained for a short while, but it fun factor soon turned, much like a new zombie. I found the controls to be imprecise, leading to MUCH less headshots than I attempted to line up. My AI companions, whom the story leads me to believe are zombie-killing elites, often lay strewn at my feet awaiting me to hold their hand as they deal with every threat in the immediate area with lackluster ability. Over time, you get a feel for handling the zombie threat, but all that instinct is thrown out the window when a boss battle arises. Among the first few boss battles, I yawned as I continually sniped its head with an Anti-Material Rifle. After 10 minutes of unloading all my ammo into its supposedly vital area, finding an ammo crate, and repeating the process, the battle is done and the boss drops begrudgingly to one knee to allow the game to continue.
I couldn't stomach the game long enough to finish it. To describe it aptly, it feels like Call of Duty meets Left 4 Dead, with Gears of War-esque control scheme. Weapons and abilities are locked until one garners enough experience to unlock that weapon/ability, and the story is broken up into several campaigns a la Left 4 Dead where 4 allies take on a horde of zombies. The only positive thing I can say about the game was seeing the tie-ins from previous REs (settings, characters, enemies, etc.). It was amusing, but nowhere close to redeeming.
In short: Save your money, and use it instead for RE6 coming out later this year. This one simply just doesn't live up to any of our expectations for the series.

It's ok if you like the series
PostedMarch 26, 2012
The game overall is very pretty to look at but when you get into it there's a multitude of issues that should have been addressed before it's release. The hit markers tend to be all over the place and the enemy Spec Ops seem to have endless stamina when using CQC, even if you shoot them square in the head as they rush towards you they don't go down. It also gets annoying when you get hit once by an enemy (say a hunter or Birkin) and you end up either fall glitching and not being able to get up, shoot, or use items or when you get smacked into an object and stuck there. Overall it's fun if you're a hard core fan of the series; it's pretty to look at but a little short for my taste. The special edition also boasts a "stylized foil sleeve" but what you get left with is the common cardboard sleeve, nothing special about it being cardboard when it's clearly advertised as being "foil".
