Big step back for the Sim City franchise. Game lacks the depth and detail that previous versions had. This is a very dumbed down version to appeal to casual gamers. Like a lot of others have said this is a glorified facebook style game. Ton's of bugs still and they are on patch 4.0 already with little progress. There is a reason for the 33% price drop in the first 3 weeks of the game being released. Wait for this one to hit the bargain bin if your going to pick it up.

I bought this game as soon as it came to PC, and haven't been REALLY disappointed with it...it doesn't exactly take very long to wear out its welcome, as the gameplay is quite cyclical, unlike that of The Sims 3 where there are enough events to keep gameplay interesting for awhile. With Sim City, you can cycle through two different regions within a hour of gameplay because everyone inevitably messes up their first region with too little energy or too many sick, uneducated folk. The sounds and music are quite nice, and very soothing. The graphics are somewhat hilarious at times with the tiniest of details being covered by EA, including the names of businesses which are downright funny most of the time. Overall, I would recommend this game for the casual gamer as a way to pass the time entertainingly...but simulation games are already repetitive, and this one is no outcast.

To start off, the biggest problem was EA deciding to make this online required, even though THIS IS SINGLE PLAYER PRIMARILY. The game launched with an astronomical amount of bugs. Don't believe the good reviews. Besides the bugs and always online, the city sizes are small, arguably smaller than Sim City 4, which I have. Do yourself a favor and just get Sim City 4, which is dirt cheap and better. Avoid this like cancer.

I got this game at midnight at launch, and decided to wait a while to review the game considering the game was not playable at launch. Big picture is this: I think this game does a disservice to every loyal Sim City fan. I will never buy another game that uses the online only model until I have read the reviews first, and I'd suggest any Sim City fan that was excited about this to get out Sim City 3000 or Sim City 4 and play it again for a while. You'll have more fun, trust me. Pros: Updated graphics and night day is nice, the concept of sharing city resources with other cities is cool, loading sequences still have random things such as, "reticulating spines" and "counting llamas" and stuff like that. Cons: Lots of crashes. no terraforming the land. if you don't like your layout- tough. If you could move just one little piece of land to fit in an airport- tough. No saves due to online nature of the game. Finding people to play with- it's cool to be able to talk to people and share stuff until they all quit and you have one ghost region after another. I was actually moderately fine with the fact that areas become ghost regions, because usually I'd mess something up in my town anyway and not want to play it anymore. The financial display is overly simplified and money management is not fun. There are lots of glitches with traffic management and AI paths, and sewage does not always flow logically. It's really hard to figure out what the problem is sometimes. The cities are really tiny, but the graphics still slow down occasionally on my machine, which is well above spec. Things that could save this game: Add an offline mode with the ability to save the game. They could call this mode sandbox or something. Make the maps 10 times bigger without slowing the graphics to a crawl, add the ability to terraform regions. Bottom line- Don't get this game, even if you're a Sim City fan. You will always be thinking about all the fun you wish you were having if it wasn't for [insert design flaw] and likely be irritated that they messed up the franchise. Maybe in a few months they will fix the problems. There have been multiple patches so far, so that's a good sign.

Let me get one thing straight: Don't listen to the other reports! When the game was released, too many people logged on causing the servers to go down. That problem is over! Everything is running smooth. It is the 2nd best game I have ever played in my whole gaming career! It is a loyal game that always is ready for you to play. Sure, the city sizes are sorta small, but it is still such a amazing game! Graphic quality is perfect, gameplay is perfect, everything is perfect! You will never get bored of this Simcity!

I'm not a fan of EA's DRM policies, and yes, I did still buy the game in spite of it. At least this time there is a solid multiplayer feature that can somewhat justify it. That being said, this game is innovative, quirky, and immensely entertaining. There have been some criticisms for the status of the servers and such, but what game that relies so heavily on online servers hasn't been a total mess for the first couple of weeks? The graphics, multiplayer interaction, and overall fun atmosphere of the game already are enough to make it an absolute blast and even more so in the future as bugs continue to be worked out. I would definitely recommend!

It's sad that there are bugs in such a great game, but take two things into consideration. One is that this is an EA game. EA is notorious for being a cruddy company when it comes to servers, connection, etc. The other is that at the time of this review (and the bad reviews before this) it's still fresh out of the gate. They have fixed many problems, and are working to fix more. The bugs and such can get obnoxious, and frustrating, but they are bugs, and this is still a great game.
A big issue that many have with SimCity, is how small the area is. it's 2k x 2k areas. It gets frustrating. I mean if you have ore in your city, u will probably focus on mining. To get only 130k an hour, u must have 3-4 ore mines, and 4 or more trading depots specific to ore. These 8 buildings alone take up about a quarter, aka 25% of the entire map. It's hard to fit everything in. You need a hospital, police station, all schools, sewage, water, power, etc. It's very difficult to cram that all into one small city. However you building in a region. Each region will have 4-16 cities. So you can focus one city on say power, that provides to other cities. Another city you can focus on school and technology, which you can trade to other cities. I feel if the cities were 4x as large, it'd be balanced. It's still very possible to make a largely successful single city, but a pain, and very unlikely if not aided by other cities.
My biggest pet peeve is water. You can spend 300k on a water plant, that charges 2k per hour, only to suck up all the water oout of that area, forcing you to destroy the entire water plant, and build it somewhere that does have water. It makes sense water isn't limitless. But here's my issue. many maps are connected to water. Aka rivers, lakes, etc. There should be a water plant that can be built on, or in some way fed by the natural water source. Aka a limitless source of water. The way that it is, no matter what you do, you eventually run completely out of water. Yeah you can build another city to specialize in water and sell the water to that desert city, but the specialized water city will dry up soon as well. You could build all 16 cities one at a time sucking up all the water, but eventually all cities will dry up, aka be useless, forcing you to start over. Power is renewable. Sewage is basically poured into a black hole, if you have a big enough plant. Garbage gets burned, etc. Water is the one thing that ruins any long games/aka high end cities.
The region mode is a good idea. I love playing with friends. It's a pet peeve that the in game IM does not work, forcing you to use some other game chat, but they should fix it soon. EA is excellent about making a great game with tons of bugs and flaws, then quickly fixing the major ones, and at least half of the minor ones. Be warned, this game requires a connection at all times, like MMO's. No subscription, but a "Region" is basically a server. Without the server there is no region, without the region there are no cities, without cities you can't play. So if you have no connection, or want to play on the bus, in a car, on a plane, in the mountains, etc, you won't be able to.
All in all I've spent at least 20 hours in this game. I really hope they fix the water issue, as that ruins any game. Even if you've spent well over 1000 hours building all 16 cities in one region, the inevitable drought will ruin all of that work. However the game is still fun. To those that are new to SimCity, think of Monopoly, but completely in depth. You must provide water, police, fire departments, schooling, transportation including buses, planes, trains, passenger trains, ferries, etc, manage taxs, create residential, and have high upkeep so residential improves giving you more rent, create industrial for the residents to have jobs and improve education so industry can provide more expensive tech, create commercial so that residents can buy things with their hard earned money, make tourists attractions for tourists, mine things, import and export supplies, trade with other cities, etc. All that said, that's just the tip of the ice berg. Almost anything that would effect a real life city, and would be required for a real life city to succeed, is in this game. You can make a Las Vegas casino city, A New York city full of high skyscrapers and tourist attractions including giant expo centers, mining towns, etc. They say "you can do a little bit of everything", i'm sorry but that's a lie. You might be able to do a VERY little of two or three things, but not everything. Why? cause you can't cram it all into one city. You're forced to cram it across several cities.
Another pet peeve, though not as bad as the water issue, is disaster prevention. I like the disasters, makes the game more realistic. However there should be disaster prevention. Example, you should be able to make a military base, which can destroy the Godzilla before he does a lot of city damage, as well as the invaders. Department of science could study earthquakes to better understand them, so that buildings will be more earthquake resistant, and earthquakes are less likely to happen (video games version of prediction). etc. When a disaster there is no "send in the army" or "How can I make it stop." You're forced to watch as it happens. The only part you have a say in, is dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.
One thing to note, is that your first city will struggle a lot. Or at least at first. Until you have other cities in the region, it's hard to get far. Example? You can get to say level 5 technology in your city, but it effects the entire region. So while level 5 tech requires almost half of an entires city worth of taxs, and area, the other cities won't need those buildings, but will still have level 5 tech unlocks. So I can't stress this enough. The first 5 hours you'll most likely want to throw this game out. Stick with it, and it will become fun.
Right now yes this game is at a 6/10 roughly. However this is a permanent review, and I feel like EA will fix it enough to be a solid 8/10.

I recently bought this game, as I heard the servers where doing bad so I waited until they were somewhat stable. Now, I didn't experience what the pre-order people experienced, however the server issues were mostly origin and not the game. The game itself has a deep level of simulation if you allow yourself to learn about all the different ways of making and running your city. So for all the people saying this game was unplayable day one, while I'm sorry for the frustration but thank you for reviewing origin and not the game.

This plays like a face book game because you have to be online ALL THE TIME. Online is nothing but junk. There is no social part of the game where you see other players running around. You cant connect to all your city's for some reason, you can have a city that makes money for hours then all of a sudden without change your city goes into the red. Traffic will clog up because ai will allow lane changes where vehicles become sideways in the street, all the time. They have ruined sim city no matter how good anyone says it is. graphics are sub par for what games do today. I bought the silly 79.99 version and will never buy another EA game except Battlefield 4 I have gave this so called social game a chance for two weeks and hate it.

The gameplay experience of the game was amazing, I couldn't believe how much the game had changed. I felt as if it were a new game while still keeping that overall simcity feel. Most of the people who give it bad ratings are just mad about the launch, and want to express their hatred for the game launch, but the severs are all up and running now. It would be nice to have an offline mode, but i can deal with it because most of the time I am playing online with my friends.
